Will an Ipad 2 wifi+3g purchased in the U.S work in India?

Hi people. I am new to this forum. I am planning to buy an iPad 2 in the U.S. My friend's coming down to India next month, so she will be bringing it along with her. I just want to know if it will work here. I don't want to unlock it, just because the original seal will go off. Please help me. I read somewhere that an AT&T model is factory unlocked. Is it true? So will that work anywhere in the world?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6), Iphone 4, Ipod classic 120gb

unlocked gsm devices like ipad at&t work on every gsm network

funny how it seem people from all over the world ask this
where in iphone forum people from all over the world ask how they can unlock their at&t locked phone for usage in their country 🙂
if those people had asked first like here they would not be in a world of trouble 🙂

Similar case...I have an ipad2 at&t being brought from the US...
i read this post on a different forum...

http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-help/21452-3g-usa-ipad-troubleshooting-edge-netwo rk-india.html

To sum up, it says : Unless the ipad2 is activated with at&t first, it will not accept any other networks in India or anywer else..

does this mean that the ipad2 should be registered with at&t before making it possible to access other networks...??

URGENT !! i have only 3 days to do something, if necessary...

Finally! I got my iPad 3G(AT&T) from the US. It was not activated there, but it came with the AT&T micro sim anyways. I got a BSNL 3G sim, activated and charged it, cut it down to the microsim size and the iPad automatically connected to CellOne network. No hitches! Have been using it since yesterday.

So, there is absolutely no need for the 3G to be activated anywhere before you bring it to India.

Hope this brings relief to all those who have been waiting for an update from a real user in India.

The info posted by DesiApple was useful. I bought IPad2 with 3G. It was with AT&T connection. I did not activate the AT&T 3G connection. I used the wireless to register and use my IPad2 for browsing, downloading the applicaitons and uploading the songs/photos when I was in US.

When I came to Chennai by default it was showing Airtel connection with the AT&T microsim which got shipped along with the Ipad2. I replaced that SIM with the Airtel 3G sim card(I went to the Airtel showroom in Adyar-Chennai to have my regular SIM card cut into MicroSIM card size. Thy did it for free). I did not have to do any additional configuration. By default once I inserted the SIM and booted the IPad2, I was able to browse and view content from Youtube and carry out all regular activities using the IPad. So all who are looking to carry a Ipad2 from US can feel free to carry a model with 3G support with AT&T connection.
