As David points out, most apps that store data files don't support folders. But, some apps, like Goodreader, do.

But here's another approach - Use one of the "file" apps that read and write files with the computer, Dropbox and/or iDisk. These will support their own folders. Then, when you want to view or otherwise access a file in another app, like Pages, you just open the file app, go to the right folder, tap the filename and choose "open in". The file apps can be thought of as a file manager. For file management, you can do it one of two ways: 1) leave your file(s) on the source and access when needed, 2) sync file(s) from source into the file app and place in a specific folder.

The reason for using such a file app and keeping files in a central location is that the iPad does not have a file system like a computer. Each app keeps its own files within its "sandbox". So if you want a PDF file viewed using two or three apps, you have to keep two or three copies of the PDF file, one in each app. Of course you can delete the file in any app once you are done. The point is, you can't have an assortment of apps accessing the same file directly.

Some such apps are: Cloud Connect (my current favorite), and iFiles.

Thank you for all the infos. I will check out some of the apps suggested over the next few days time.

I do now really wonder, what you all use your iPads for! I have tried to locate some iPad screen shots of users but couldnt locate anything of significance yet!

First and most its a problem to locate an app and than, test it to see if it meets your needs. The problem at first is, there is no such a site e.g. as download.com, for Mac OS to evaluate apps / Mac software developed by 3rd parties! Since, I dont have much time to browse for apps on iTunes, I try to download those that sound only useful...!

I am using my iPad for both biz & leisure, for that reason I need to organize them well. But I feel such an expensive device, which has been thought well on almost any front, has missed the most important functionality and user experience; file management!

I was searching for a way to create folders within the app "Pages", so I thought I'd try something. Since I am on IOS4 on my iPad, I just clicked on the [Edit] button on the Pages homepage to start the "dancing" apps, or in this case "dancing" documents. Then, when I dragged one document onto another document, it automatically created a folder and I had two documents in the folder. By continuing, I was able to place as many as 12 documents into the dame folder. By selecting the folder name while in the [Edit] mode, you can also rename the folder. So, I am thinking that the creation of folders within an app is tied to the IOS4 system.
