How do I import video from DV camera into iMovie on iMac!?

I have a firewire cable and a panasonic PV-GS36 DV camcorder. I try to connect the camcorder to my iMac, but the camera still won't connect to my mac!
How do I connect this video camera to my mac!?
In manual it says this camera is compatible with Mac and I have the specific DV cable for this camera which says it allows it to connect to a mac.
I tried to see if it would connect to the Image Capture application, iPhoto, and the iMovie app. None of them recognized the camcorder.
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

I need an answer SOON please because I need to import the video to my Mac for a school project soon so I can edit the movie we made!!

Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7), none

Don't get the Sony DCR-SX85! The video quality on this camcorder is terrible! It does work with Mac, but the video is blurry even on a screen the same size of an iphone's screen. I had the cam on best video quality option and was in good lighting conditions and it still had very bad video quality. Do not buy that cam!
