Mackeeper a virus!

I have had my macbook for only two weeks! and "mackeeper" came out as a system update...at first I thought it was real but it says I have so much junk in my computer and Ive only had it for two weeks! Idk if i should just delete it? Help! This is the reason why I switch from a PC to Mac, because I had heard that is really hard for Macs to get a virus. In addition to this my Skype called me saying I had a virus so I worried even more!

MacKeeper is a genuinely good program for lots of situations. It does have it's own anti-virus, along with several utilitities that allow the cleaning of the system safely. It's much like Onyx, except with more functionality and the capability for online chat to a reputable person that can help with particularly difficult situations.

I've never had a problem with MacKeeper OR Onyx. The virus checker, like all virus checkers, does slow the system a little but not to any great extent as people might think.

Most Mac slowness can be caused by a lot of conditions such as large log files, console logs, duplicate files and fonts, and other issues that MacKeeper and Onyx can fix readily.

I think nearly everyone would disagree with you. I'm just posting this as anyone glancing at your comment may feel that MacKeeper is actually a good product. I'm not going to comment one way or the other as you seem to have your opinion on it. I would just suggest that anyone that is considering installing it should read through this thread and browse the many other threads on this topic.

Joey,

I believe that there is a lot of ignorance going around about this also. Whether people disagree or not, matters little. If you are so inclined to believe that the program is a virus, then so be it. It is not. The program has been highly ranked by MacWorld and other reputable publications, so it's an education thing I believe.

There have been many instances (Google them) that some malware has infiltrated a system masquerading as MacKeeper. That's a time tested technique that, of course, plays again on the educated and ignorant. People are always trying to get something for nothing. When they do, they fall into a susceptibilty that can lead to being taken in.

All I am saying is that I've got over a a third of a century invested in systems, and no number of forums will ever take the place of experience. MacKeeper, if purchased from Zeobit, is a solid program, not a virus, not malware. If you have issues with something masquerading as MacKeeper, then your warnings are certainly valid.

MacKeeper is a kind of cheating / virus which is only out to get money out of you and to get you to buy MacKeeper. MacKeeper claim that you have different issues that are critical.

I have experienced MacKeeper claim implausible many viruses on my NEW Imac,1577 virus problems, to be precise, with red warning

I have now bought another virus program F-Secure and it found no virus on my new IMac

MacKeeper do not allow criticism on their Facebook page and your criticism will not be visible to others.

I do not trust MacKeeper and I'm happy to delete MacKeeper

MacDefender is a trojan. NOT, strictly speaking, a virus. A virus is a type of malware that propagates by inserting a copy of itself into and becoming part of a program. It spreads from one computer to another, leaving infections.

A trojan, however, is a harmful piece of software that seems legitimate and tricks the user into downloading a excecuting it. However, trojans can not infect other files; it has to be directly downloaded. (email attachment, for example)
