Light leak problem

When I am using an application with a dark background, I see a yellow light comming in from the edges of the screen, especially the corners. I bought mine the first day so I would think that any glue would have evaporated by now. Any ideas?

Wow Jeff. Yours has really a lot of leaks. Mine has just maybe what you have in the upper right corner. Compared to yours, mine has nothing.
Can´t you take it back? And change it for a new one?

This leaking problem seems more and more to be some kind of "Standard". Shouldn´t Apple do something about it? Or at least reply in these posts to their clients?

Apple will never reply here, they don't even read this -- this is a user to user help forum.

Apple will almost never openly acknowledge problems like this (with very very rare exception, like the antenna last year, even then, they blamed the user for not knowing how to hold a phone).

Apple WILL correct the problem as production continues -- and the general concensus right now is that returning it will only net you the same probability of another one with the same problem. If your light leakage is really bad (as it seems to be for some people -- others indicate it is no different than their iPad Original, mine doesn't seem to have a problem at all) then it is probably worth trying to exchange it. If it's minimal, the current wisdom is to wait (the ipad has a one-year warranty) and have them swap it out a few months down the road once the problem has been corrected.

But don't wait for any kind of verbal acknowledgement from Apple.

Thx,

I will wait a bit more. Maybe I will post a picture and aks you all if mine is really worth to change.
cause I am more afraid to have a worse one than the one I have 🙂
And if they (here in Europe) will change it before the first year ends, than I can wait. But I believe in Europe they are more difficult than in the uSA with exchanging stuff.
I will inform this week, in the store where I bought it if they know any people who have complaint or not.

I have the idea almost everyone who bought an iPad 2 has some kind of light bleeding. My iPad 2 also has light bleeding, but only at one small spot in the bottom left.

I also have a small spot where the backlight is a little bit darker than on other places on the screen. I hope that's the glue problem... I think I'll wait some time to see if it disappears, but if it doesn't, I'll bring it back to the store.

I have the same issue. I ordered mine online and received it on Monday (Black Verizon 3G 64gb) and so far everything else seems to be working just fine (besides safari and words with friends hd crashing every once in a while). I've read various different articles in regard to this and though some say it should go away with time, no one has reported any positive results yet. I just called the local Apple store today to set up an appointment and the associates that I spoke to told me that it's an issue that won't clear up on it's own and that I would have to have it looked at and swapped out for a different one. They were rude and pushy on the phone and didn't seem to know much about the process or how the "swapping out" of iPads would work. I'd suggest making an appointment and taking it in, if you have time, considering you spent $500+ on this device. I'll make sure to post my appointment experience afterwards for any of you that are interested.

Most of the tablet type devices with LED backlight will have a slight light "leak" at the edges. The problem I see, is that users set brightens all the way up and then claim of leaks. Try the same with your ordinary LED TV set - set the brightens to full bright and look at the edges. There is nothing wrong with your iPads, just lower the brightens a bit when viewing in darker environment. When outside in full sun, with full brightness, you'll not even notice any "leaks". I suggest, that users stop taking pictures of iPads with full brightens in dark, rooms. try LED TV set trick and then complain. Or just return your iPad get something that meets your needs and problem solved.

rm_idiots.now that's pretty rude, but given your alias, your are a troll and playing the part correctly.

Light leaks and stuck/dead pixels are old problems associated with LCDs. I heard about them 6 years ago, and I am sure they are as old as LCDs. Stuck/dead pixels are far less common today than they were 5 years ago, so I assume the public outcry was so great that companies actually did something to reduce the problem (cleaner labs probably). The fact that dead/stuck pixels became commonly mentioned in warranties and what constituted a "broken" display demonstrates how much in the spotlight that particular problem as become.

Light leaks are a little more elusive because under 98% of display conditions they are not apparent. That's probably why they public outcry is less and they still show their ugly head to wildly varying degrees. The two iPad 2s I have played with in conditions that would enable me to confirm light leaks, both showed them. I also see that online either the people without the problem are very quiet or everyone has the problem who cares to look. At this point I would not hold your breath that a replacement unit would not have the same issue, and by returning your iPad you do risk getting one with a worse light leak and/or stuck/dead pixels.

Having said that, the only way Apple will care to fix a problem this slight is if they get enough returns to make it worth their time. I am betting that this problem will get fixed because Apple users are a pretty picky lot, but it'll be several months down the road. Right now Apple is far more concerned at filling the inventory pipe than anything of this nature.
