iPad 2 64GB Wifi+3G - error 1013 on update (and now restore)

I picked up a new iPad 2 earlier - my first one.

Extactically happy with it, I trundled home after a 15min wait at the local Comet (no Apple queues for me, thanks!) and started to sync my apps and then play around.

iTunes asked me to update to 4.3.1, so I said yes.

BAM. "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1013)."

This is using the iPad cable, hooked up to a mid-2010 unibody Mac mini, equipped with 10.6.6 and the latest version of iTunes.

I've restarted iTunes and indeed the Mac and the iPad, but I don't know what else to do. Is there anything, or am I out of luck? 😟

Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Thanks to everyone for pointing out the fix (commenting out gs.apple.com from your local hosts file. In fact, since Apple shouldn't be monkeying around with hosts files, but should expect that users have other name resolution services (DNS anyone???), I flat-out deleted that entry.). Now the important question...

*** IS APPLE DOING MODIFYING MY HOSTS FILE?

This worked perfectly! Thank you.

On Mac OSX:

On your Mac, go to your “Applications” folder.
Now navigate to the “Utilities” folder.
Launch "Terminal".
Type "sudo nano /etc/hosts" (without quotes) and hit return.
Enter your password
Use the down arrow key to find the “gs.apple.com” entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering “#” in front of the text.
Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O.
Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X.
Restore your iPhone to iOS 4.2.1 using iTunes.

Yes, Sigurd is correct.

An error 1013 is most likely caused by altering the host list.

Simply remove the line of code listed below and your back to talking with apple:

On Mac:
* Open Finder
* Hold down COMMAND + SHIFT keys and press 'G'
* Enter "/private/etc/" in the field and press "Go"
* Find "hosts" file in the directory
* Drag the file to your desktop
* Open it in text editor
* Remove the line that has gs.apple.com entirely or put a # at the beginning of it to comment it out
* Save the file
* Drag it back to the /private/etc/ folder.
* You'd need to enter your username and password to authenticate the move

This will solve your problem.
