Xcode 4.0.1 in App Store; how do I update from Xcode 4.0?

Earlier this week I purchased my first app from the Mac App Store, Xcode 4.0. Today the app store shows it was updated to Xcode 4.0.1 on 3/25/2011 to fix a series of bugs, some of which appear to be important. The Updates button in the app store app shows "All apps are up to date." How do I update 4.0.1? I thought the app store was supposed to make this easier.

Thanks for the procedure.

A couple of notes for anyone else looking here:

Point #2: ("As root, again use pkgtool ...") Not sure why you use the word "again." What and where is pkgtool? I can't find it. I skipped this step.

Point #3: ("Weed out any remnants of Xcode from ~/Library") There's a lot of stuff in ~/Library, assuming you mean ~/Library and its subdirectories. Can you narrow it down any? I ended up not deleting anything.

The installation did proceed to work, as far as I can tell.

Your method looks useful, thanks. But I couldn't do step 2 as I couldn't find something like pkgtool. I did have pig-configuration which seemed to think there were no XCode packages around. But now Xcode is fully erased but still the App Store thinks it is still installed. Stuck. Any more help would be appreciated ...

I think I found the solution and it's much simpler. When you open up the App Store page to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.2.1 and the button says "Installed", and clicking on it has no effect you're doing the wrong thing. You need to instead click on the "Updates" button on the app store toolbar at the top of the window.

Voila - xCode 4.2 is upgraded to xCode 4.2.1.

Please let me know if this helps you...

(I'm kind of surprised people are being told to completely uninstall xCode - this looks like a case of simple bad usability).

I've been following this thread but I havent been able to find a solution to my problem-

I had xcode 3, then upgraded my mac to snow leopard- i have 10.6.8 now. I cannot, however, download xcode 4.0 - apple says that i need to upgrade to Lion (10.7)??

That's another $30 i need to shell out in order to get xcode 4?

I noticed that xcode 4 was originally available for 10.6, but now i only find links for xcode 4.2

Can someone help me download xcode 4 for 10.6.8?

Thanks.
