Poor sound quality over Bluetooth streaming music to Jawbone Jambox

My 2008 MacBook Air is running 10.5.8 - I have a Jawbone JAMBOX bluetooth speaker system that I use to stream music, Skype, etc., from the Air. I also use the JAMBOX with my iPhone for music or as a speakerphone.

Music streaming from the iPhone sounds amazing - great fidelity. But when paired with my MacBook Air, the sound quality (fidelity) of music from my iTunes library is awful. Sounds almost as bad as AM vs. FM radio.

Any thoughts? Is the bluetooth spec different on an older (2008) machine? The iPhone GS is the same age...

Thanks in advance!

Appears that BT audio only works while there are no other BT devices in use. Soon as I touch the mouse, audio pauses, crackles, or cuts out completely. Have to keep hitting play to resume.

Clearly an osx issue. Each device works fine alone, but multiple bt devices overwhelm the OSX bt driver. This needs to be fixed by Apple. No user serviceable parts inside...

It's working great for me... I paired it as a headset device and under bluetooth settings in the settings dropdown tab (next to the plus and minus buttons) select... "Use as audio device" (when the Jambox has been selected)... That will send your output to the device with the proper impedence/pre-amp and it sounds great.

When I used the output settings under Sound in the System Preferences, it sounded pretty horrible and messed up.

I'm on a MBP OS X 10.7.3

Good luck.

MB Air on Lion.

1) There is definitely a conflict between an application called Boom and Jambox.

2) Barrettlyon's method worked for me. Great sound quality. But if you use that method, the Jambox microphone won't work. If you go to the Jambox sound preferences, you will see the "Stereo" version is highlighted. But the moment, you change Input to Jambox microphone, the Output switches to "Mono".

I found this thread on the Jambox site but I'm not sure the Terminal commands to fix the Bluetooth settings work for me. I end up in a command line stuck at

After wrestling with this for more than a year, my solution was to give the Jambox to my son as a birthday present. He has a Dell computer and it works fine for him. I had high hopes, but in the end nothing worked consistently.....or easily! Mine was purchased AT the Apple store, with a recommendation by an Apple Rep, no less! Can't believe they marketed something that couldn't be used with a large percentage of their devices!

If your Jambox doesn't sound great when connected to your Mac, but sounds great when connected to an iPhone or iPad, you might want to try the following. This assumes that you have tried other troubleshooting tips posted here.

Default bluetooth settings on your Mac may create a low quality bluetooth connection between your Mac and your bluetooth device.

We need to edit the bluetooth plist file located at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.BluethoothAudioAgent.plist. The property or key that needs to be changed in this file is "Apple Bitpool Min (editable)". The default value is 2. You should try and use a value between 40 to 58 and see if your problem is resolved.

To edit the plist file, launch Terminal and type the following. Do not copy and paste as you may experience unexpected results. Also make sure your Mac is backed up before trying any of this if you are not comfortable working in Terminal.

defaults write com.apple.BluethoothAudioAgent "Apple Bitpool Min (editable)" -integer 40

After this, shut of your bluetooth and turn it back on.

This got rid of an annoying intermittent chirping sound coming from my jambox when connected to my Mac via bluetooth. I used a value of 48 instead of 40. Just play around with the values to see what works.

After trying everything on this thread, here's what worked for me:

Go to home/Library/Preferences and find com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and send to the Trash (but don't delete!)

Open up bluetooth settings and pair the JB

That's all I had to do. I went to System Preferences -> Sound and selected the Stereo option, which hadn't been playing anything before.

So I found this page while searching online to troubleshoot for the same issue, albeit from a Dell laptop running Windows 10. I found that when going into my properties while using it as 'headset' I could disable the microphone on the speaker and the sound quality dramatically improved. I believe that the blips and static that was playing back through was some re-uptake from the microphone that was unintentionally turned on. This would also explain why changing it to 'headphones' helps some users.
