iPad 2 home button fail
Sometimes I have to press it 10+ times to get it to respond.
Is this definitely a hardware problem or could it be software related - It happens in any app.

I am having this problem too.. It started happening shortly after the upgrade to IOS 5.. Hmmmm..... It is very on again, off again... I thought it might be a software issue...
Not happy about it...
OMG!! Greydragon it has happened today again!!! totally unresponsive today I had to reset it 3 times and restart it...this is ridiculous....luckily for you you are in the US but I am not...I cannot wait for vacation to take this back in to them.....I am not impressed about spending my money for this foolishness!! some days it works some days it doesn't ...if this is such a major problem they should recall them..."Not a happy camper" at all!!!!😠
This might be a problem of mistreated when stored in a retail store or shipped to the retail store. I have an iPad 2 and bought it off of best buy and no problems. Works perfectly.
I had the same happen to my first 64gb ipad2. I have given a lot of advice to friends to make sure you close programs by pushing the home button twice and closing them. It has worked for all of them. My wife's has a softer button and has not occurred. It could be two problems here... Not enough memory for iOS5 and a faulty button. Good luck!
Ummm ///i bought my ipad directly from APPLE.
thank you i have been having this issue since dec..i got it on the 13th and before jan 13th this darn home button has given me nightmares...i will be sure to visit apple on my next trip to the us this year to have it replaced...frustrated!!!
I had the same issue with my iPad1. I am using iOs5. I went and talked to the genius person at the Apple store and guess what? You don't need the home button. He went into my Settings > General > Multitasking Gestures switched it to ON and then took me back to my home page, opened an app, he held his hand on the screen, spread his fingers out (like a spider) and then pulled them together to the middle of the screen and wallah! I was back at the home screen. Also if you want to use the multitasking while in this mode, just take 4 fingers and push upwards and the apps show at the bottom. Hope this helps.
I've had the same problem which has been driving me crazy, but I just may have found a solution. If I pull the protective microfilm I bought with the protective case out of the case slightly, thus the home button becomes 'covered' over as opposed to open behind the circular cut out, then press the home button, then the problem disappears?? Unbelievable, but true! So is this something to do with pressure on the home button, who knows, but it's working for me :)
Strange, this did't start happening to me until after I took my iPad2 on a flight. (also using a smart cover). I managed to fix this by pressing the home button until the "quick launch" bar (not sure if that's what they're calling it...maybe multi task? I'll have to look that one up) appears. What I found was that just about every app on my iPad2 was open on this bar. When pressing and holding an apps icon on the bar it gave me the option to close it, which I'm guessing takes it out of active memory. Once I closed the Apps on the "multitask" bar (or whatever it's called), the home button started working fine again.
Now if this makes sense to anyone who can identify the proper name of this bar...please do so.
But that is a work around. Is it still under warranty? If so why not get a fully functional unit? Your hardware, your call.
I got mine engraved so I'd have to send it in. I'm not convinced that this is a hardware issue so I'd rather not have to live without my iPad for a week or more.
Owners choice,
Good suggestion for a work around. I'm going to have to file in case I have problems. I was always worried about that part, must take more abuse than any other part of the ipad.
Just wanted to post a status update on this. My home button continues to work perfectly since I figured out how to manage open apps.
All is well.
If you go to your home screen turn your iPad side ways press and hold the home button and spin the IPad back to the normal straight up and down position then release the home button... Hope this helps
