Lights on front of Macbook Pro

This might sound like a dumb question, but I am very curious.
On the old models of Macbooks their has always only been 1 'breathing' light on the front of the notebooks.
I recently received my new 15" 2011 Macbook pro and noticed the 1cm wide, what i thought was the light, on the front of my notebook... then when i close the lid a different led about 1cm left of what i thought was the light starts breathing, hidden by the aluminum but light gets through it seems because if many tiny tiny holes in the aluminum.
I have searched the apple forums and google, and called apple support, and can not seem to find out what this 1cm black strip is on the front of my macbook.

Does anyone here know what what im talking about for one, and two, what this black strip is ? I'm very curious.
