Explanation for inaudible audio?

My class was having a problem with "vanishing audio"--audio that was clearly in the project moving levels, etc. but would not play over the sound system. Checking on this forum, we uncovered the View>Video Out>Canvas menu selection that, happily, allowed us once again to hear the audio.

I am wondering a couple of things. For what purpose does this menu item exist? There must be some alternative location for View>Video Out, but as this is a checkbox item, why would anyone uncheck it?

In a second question is there a reference work giving the function of all FCExp menu items?

The View > Video Out selection allows you to toggle between Canvas playback and Digital Cinema Preview (full screen). It also enables refresh of connections to firewire devices (camcorders, converters, etc.) When you select one of these options, it sets a parameter in the FCE preferences file, which experience has shown those settings can be corrupted by 'gremlins'. Hence you may from time to time need to reset it.

The FCE Help contains the entire reference manual. You can access it from +Help > Final Cut Express User Manual.+ It is also possible to extract the entire PDF from the FCE application package; if you want to do that, let us know and one of us can show you the procedure. The Help file is reasonably comprehensive but since it is based on the FCPro Help, there are occasional errors in it regarding FCExpress.

Tom Wolsky's books and DVDs are excellent tutorial & reference material. Diana Weynand's book is an actual reference but I have not found it particularly useful. As for other resources, I have especially benefited from and highly recommend Ken Stone's website and Izzy Video tutorials.
