Can't Drag and Drop in iMovie '11

HI NorSkott - I didn't have the problem you mention - no preview in the

upper right area of the screen - but for whatever reason I'm able to drag

after first clicking, no just skimming over event clips - as clicking brings

up a yellow rectangle with re-size handles - this selection is eminetly

draggable to the project area.

I think that iMovie '11 is completely flawed. I can no longer drag and drop clips into a project from an event. I can no longer trim clips. No more preview of a clip. No more splitting clips. In fact, anything that I do to a clip is simply ignored by iMovie. It is completely useless! How do I get my money back on this stinker?

I also experienced this problem. I found that I could only drag clips once I had imported them into the event list, highlighted the whole clip (i.e. by clicking on the preview area and dragging the yellow trim rectangle over the whole clip duration), and then dragging from the trim area directly to the project area.

Dragging the clip name from the left side of the bottom pane does not permit it to be added to the project.

This is stupid, Apple.

I'm switching to Mac... from Win ... there are no logic to some of Mac's ways... this is one in iMovie. 1 1/2 hours of time lost due to no user logic. Nice apple...!

I have the same problem. Drag and drop in my new mac mini which has imovie 11 already installed, is not working at all.

This is not sth I am doing for the first time, I edited some short family clips before on MBA,But this time almost 90% of bottons on mac mini's imovie 11 is unclickable....Please help Me APPLEEEEEEEEEEE.

I hope I'm not repeating a solution that's already been posted. Three hours of searching and an hour of Apple tech help resulted in a convoluted work around that was too time consuming. I'm not sure if this solution was available at the start of the Apple tech session or if we did something to make it available. At any rate, on the bottom left of the iMovie project box is the Event Library. Under that there is an iPhoto Videos option. Clicking on that imported all my videos from iPhoto. In less than a minute almost 800 videos (mostly a couple of minutes long) became available to the right of the Event Library.

I'd still like a click and drag option that worked, but in a way, for me, this is better.

I've recently started using a Mac, and I'm still struggling to learn. I did successfully edit a video a couple of weeks ago, but now I can't drag and drop the videos from iPhoto to iMovie. I can, however, drag and drop actual photos.

I tried the solution suggested by TomBomb1, but while my videos show up when I open iPhoto, they are not listed in there when I open the event library from iMovie.

It may be that I'm not doing something very simple and obvious, but as I said I'm still in that very frustrating phase in which I'm trying to forget how a pc works, so that I can learn how to use a mac.

I am new to iMovie, longtime Mac user, and am finding the experience very frustrating. All I want to do is drag still photos into the new movie trailers and then lengthen the photo so that it can be a three-second-long photo, for example.

I don't feel it should be that complicated to do, but I cannot even get a photo to drag into iMovie from the desktop of my Macbook.

Even just making regular iMovies has been really convoluted in iMovie 11. I don't know what it was like before as I have nothing to compare it to. I always thought iMovie was supposed to be user-friendly, but it seems Apple has tried too hard to make "idiot-proof" software and has dumbed it down so much that they have left very little control in the hands of the users, and have taken all common sense out of the app as well.

I wonder at times if anyone at Apple actually uses this program! Why wouldn't they want a feature wherein users could drag still photos into iMovie? And if I have missed it, and it is available, then I have not been able to figure out how to do it.

Most of the problems on here can be solved by going to your "preferences" and making sure "show advanced tools" is set to on. 🙂 Hope this helps some of you.

Same problem here. I followed the tutorials exactly but could not use drag drop to edit videos. It seems that drag-drop is broken in general.

As a longtime Mac user, I know I should be able to take a video on my iPhone, import to iPhoto, drag it onto the iMovie icon, and immediately begin editing it. I have no idea what could possibly be the point of lacking this capability. iMovie should accept a lot more formats from either the import command or drag and drop.

Where are you supposed to edit movies taken on your Apple iPhone? Whose first thought wouldn't be iMovie? Why the silly convoluted workarounds for such an obviously expected capability? Am I missing something?

Commect your phone. Open iMovie. Click FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA.

I can do this in iMovie '08 because I tried it and it worked. A friend who has the new iMovie but kept iMovie '08 let me try. As with my iMovie11, with my friend's iMovie11 I was unable to drag photos from the desktop. But in iMovie '08 it is possible to drag movies from the desktop. This doesn't have anything to do with any advanced tools that the new iMovie has, which you may or may not have enabled. Apple devs have fundamentally broken iMovie. They need to unbreak it and make it user-friendly again.

AppleMan I was speaking of the OS version and dragging photos from a desktop to iMovie, not from an iOS device.
