I think it is the fan noise, not the drive. No vibes at all. Only time I hear the drive is during r/w, but that is absolutely ok because it is pretty "muffled", soft and not hard, clicking noises as for some other drives. BTW, my room is really quiet.
Thanks.. But actually by installing a non-Apple HDD it becomes harder to use Windows in Bootcamp partition, cause you'll have a fan problem there. Also it lowers the resell value of the iMac.
Apple should stop to advertise iMac as silent computers until they really care about HDD noise.
here is the same discussions

people have different HDs and the same problems
seems there is a common design flaw in aluminium iMacs, they just have nothing to prevent this rotational HDD noise
I had a Western digital die on me, since it was new they preplaced it (21.5 " Mid 2011 i7) and it has the dreaded Seagate and its totally quiet I have a friend with a late 2010 with the same drive and it makes that grumbling sound. Why two drives both with the same serial numbers can sound so different is beyond me, unless its a firmware update on the later drives.
I dunno what to belive anymore about this hdd's the thing is clear u spen a lot of money for an beautifull imac with cool design cool display an all goes down cuz of one small pice that plays one good role in the mac this discution will take place forever the only thing u can do after u spent a lot of money for you imac is to spend a littel more to get a ssd . Its a sad story afterall , if i would have read all this posts i would have not buy an imac thats for sure cuz i though ill get all the good things in one cool design .
