15 Macbook Pro 2011 can't wake from sleep sometimes

My new MBP 2011 can't wake up from sleep sometimes. This is a replacement machine because my first mbp 2011 had that known freezing issue but i don't recall having this problem.

Today when i tried to wake it up, i saw white streaks across my screen. I took a picture and this is what it looks like http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1662666/Photo%20Apr%2005%2C%202%2031%2040%20PM.jpg

Do you guys think this is a hardware issue or another ATI driver issue?
Should l call apple store for another replacement?

Here are 2 possible solutions as suggested by users in another thread concerning the same issue:

1. Disable Safe Sleep - One user reported that this worked for them.

2. Disable Automatic Graphics Card Switching - Mixed reviews on whether this fixes it.

I will be testing these two options in the coming days and reporting what I find. I use my computer with a HengeDock at work so whenever I leave, I pull the computer out and basically let it put itself to sleep. About half the time I wake to a blank screen like others have reported. I haven't seen the white screen with lines. I've been able to wake the computer by putting it to sleep/waking it one or two more times.

Try the touch command, whilst in terminal type:

sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/ and hit return

it will prompt you for your admin passwd, type that in and hit return. I was getting the dreaded black screen every morning when waking the laptop from sleep. After trying this it woke ok this morning. It's only been one day so we shall see. Am on my second early 2011 MBP and have tried everything suggested all nojoy. Cheers

Good point! Nope early 2011 MBP 15". Probably something else with the 13". Have one of those as well but it doesn't have the issue. Sorry. Have you tried reinstalling the OS? Probably drastic but it might be worth a try. Don't use migration assistant and see if a fresh install does the trick, then you can migrate your software over one at a time to eliminate a software issue. Have you done a hardware test by any chance? How about SMC and PRAM reset? Other thing that might work is look on Mcafixit's site for their general maintenance routine and try that. It involves starting the computer in safe mode and whilst there doing a permissions repair. Do both SMC and PRAM resets and then using an app like Onyx run their cash cleaning routines, maintenance scripts and some other stuff that is listed on Macfixit's site and then shut down and restart a couple of times. Might be worth a try before doing something drastic like doing a fresh install of the OS. Cheers

Same problem with second 2011 MacBook Pro 15" 2.2 ghz... Wakes with either a majority garbage pattern on screen like in earlier posted picture or wakes completely with snow, or screen with items skewed all over the place. Sorry for the stupid sounding description but can't even think of words to describe all of the things that are happening and I am very frustrated with finding that this is happening with yet a second machine.

The first machine worked fine for the first two weeks and then started developing symptoms. The second machine has went less than 2 weeks and now doing it as well. Biggest problem is that I am going to have to make a 300 mile round trip just to go visit a Genius Bar...

Also occasionally having a yellow background in some of the places where white should be when it boots up... Had this with the first one, Apple Genius Bar replaced the Logic Board. Wiped out and reinstalled OS and still same problem... This is a $2000+ laptop and this is 100% unacceptable.

Hi everyone,

My MBP 15" could not wake up from sleep or has a blank screen with the white light on (not pulsating).

I had to press and hold power button and restart after trying all ways to wake it, like pressing on keys, moving the mouse, etc.

Upon restart this messgae appeared:

Anyone here knows what's happening and how to resolve this issue?

Bring it in to the service centre?

Thanks and regards

Isaac

Just in case, Apple is paying attention:

My 15" Macbook Pro (OS 10.6.8) purchased several months ago started to display the problem - If I go to sleep on my own while the lid is open, I refuse to wake up the screen - shortly I after I did the latest update to the operating system a few weeks ago.

I have set the system preferences so that it will never sleep while it is connected to the power adapter.

When I have encountered the problem since then, I have had to turn off the computer and turn it back on.

The next time it happens, I'll try the tactic of closing the lid for and then reopenning it. I'll also face to the East and sacrifice a new-born goat. @#$@#@$%

Sent my MBP 15" (early 2011) for a check up recently due to a Battery Alert!

With regards to the sleep issue, the engineer did a variety of checks and found out that the RAM was the issue. Apparently bad RAM causes the computer to hang/freeze and also attributed to heat.

Conclusion:

Buy good and well tested RAM and keep your baby cool at all times.

Anyway, I was able to get a battery replacement FOC even though the battery warranty period has expired.

And I went back to the retailer who sold me the MBP to get it replaced, FOC again.

Only inconvenience is having to travel and wait.

Shalom

Isaac

I hope this solves or at least identifies the sleep issue. :-)
