Does your neighbor have your iPad? Go ask. 🙂
I ordered a refurbished iPad last week and it came a day early. I heard the USPS man talking to my neighbor about a package but didn't think much of it until I saw online that my order was out for delivery today. It is being shipped via International Economy Distribution - Indirect Signature Required. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to my neighbor yet, but does Fedex use USPS for local deliveries and does my neighbor have my iPad right now?

Does FedEx use USPS for delivery? In some cases, yes (and vice versa).

Now it says delivery exception, customer was not available or business closed. They didn't leave any tag, or maybe it blew off. I don't know how it works when Fedex makes USPS do its dirty work. It supposedly is in a Houston facility right now, which is kind of far away.
If I tell them to hold it at the nearest Fedex location, where would that end up? I have a Fedex authorized shipcenter nearby, does that count? Or does it leave it at the Post OFfice since they are using USPS? Also on the Fedex site, it says that they will hold my package AFTER the estimated delivery date. What about the day of the estimated delivery instead? It was suppose to come tomorrow but came today instead.
Ahh it's so annoying because I got a Fedex Ground package just the other day at around 2PM so I assumed that would be the appropriate time but now they decided to use USPS which comes at 10ish AM and that's when I'm face first in a pillow. My doorbell has been broken for ages and there's so much frickin' traffic and road construction sounds I can't hear it even if I wanted to. Should I just sign my name and tape it to my front door and hope no one steals my package? I don't exactly live in a quiet or respectable location. I'd rather not talk to my neighbor...

I would give then a call. The FedEx website gives a general phone number. Just call that and get the proper department. They will ask for the tracking number. They will tell you when and where you can pick it up. Only you can answer the question whether pre-signing it is safe.
I finally got it and the guy bothered to knock instead of just leaving it so that's good. He said he didn't want to leave it there because it was an iPad so he knocked to make sure. How does he know it's an iPad??? I looked and there's a small sticker that shows the model number A1219 along with the serial and part numbers. I guess if you were in the know about what that model number stood for and the general box size and return address, it would be pretty obvious to someone who's probably delivered it a million times already.
It is surprising what they seem to know. Two Christmases ago I ordered two engraved iPods Touch for gifts. They were delivered together, but in separate, identical packages. When the FedEx guy rang the bell, I answered the door to sign for them and when he handed them to me he said, "Those are two very nice Christmas gifts!"
Since the iPads are being shipped from outside of the US (same for other contries), there exists somewhere in the FedEx/USPS/UPS systems a manifest stating exactly what is in the parcel.
Bewteen that and the shape of the box (and the amount they probably deliver) not really a mystery.

I know that Fedex can hand off delivery to USPS, but I don't think USPS ever hands things off to someone else for delivery. They may lease space on a FEDEX plane, but I don't think they give up control/delivery of the item.
Its not typical, but yes it does happen (first hand experience). May well only be in certain parts of the county.
So wait, the actual specific contents (not an ambiguous description like "Electronics") of the parcel is written in the manifest for international orders? How is this not a problem? And then there's the model number on the outside of the box, even if the box is generic looking. Apple products are pretty sought after, high-ticket items. I know Netflix has a big problem with theft of their discs because they ship in red envelopes, and Gamefly makes their envelopes white to deter recognition that there's a $60 game inside. What's to keep a delivery man from just swiping it and reporting that the item was delivered, especially for pre-signed situations like mine where anyone could have stolen it from my front porch and that would make a credible enough story for the delivery man? Not saying they are bad people, just possible bad apples in the mix.
I also have a question about the LCD on the iPad. Since I've never seen one in person and have a refurbished device, is the LCD suppose to have a really apparent and big screen door effect? It is far more pronounced than any other IPS display I've seen, short of getting really close to a big-screen TV. My microphone also doesn't seem to be very sensitive although I haven't tried recording anything. The Talking Tom Cat line of programs don't work well unless I literally turn the iPad over and position the mic hole half a foot from my mouth.
