Corrupted Backup

Hello. I got an Ipod Touch 4th gen a few months ago, and I have have the latest version of Itunes. But one day it came up with a message that read: "Itunes could not backup the ipod "blah's Ipod" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the Ipod". Now I have not done ANYTHING to my computer that would change any settings to anything, it's the only ipod that I have ever connected to my computer and itunes application. I have attempted to delete my backup and force it to make a new one which was not successful. My backup somehow has returned on itunes. I have attemped to restart AND shut down my computer both of which did not work. If I try to update my Ipod software to the newest version of 4.3.1 it cannot because my backup is corrupted. That is pretty much everything that I can mention about my situation and help would be great! Anyone have an idea of what I should try? Thanks a bunch! (also assume I know NOTHING about using a computer, like I have the brain of a caveman so be as descriptive as possible when giving directions please)

My ipod DOES work on itunes, at least as far as adding and removing music, pictures, applications. The only issue is with the backup. It does function properly like it should when not connected to the computer.

I'm making an assumption here, that you've got all your iTunes Media backed up.
If that's not the case do so now so you're covered if things go sideways.

Now you have 2 things to do, one delete the corrupted iPod back up correctly.
In iTunes go to Edit>Preferences
Click Devices (your iPod is not connected for this).

You'll see Device backups and the one you want should show the serial number of your iPod when your pointer is over it.
Select it and click Delete Backup (Scroll down to that button.)
Scroll down further and click OK to close the Window.
That should take care of iTunes .

Now your iPod, you will have to do a full factory restore, eliminating everything on the iPod and then you will set it up from scratch.
If you don't do that you will simply be restoring the corrupt file/files that got you into this in the first place.

Remember, no back up!
