You should not be limited to just an Airport Express router. If you have an ethernet only connection, then why not bring a portable travel router made by many other network providers?
The AirPort Express is a portable travel router, same as others.
All of the solutions I am reading here require a wired ethernet line. None of them are appropriate for a phone line being the only source.

Which is exactly what the OP asked about.
If the phone line goes to a router with only an ethernet connection out then the AE will work fine.

I think everyone assumed the OP was talking about a phone line with DSL.
No, everyone didn't.
All this is very good info, but what about the growing number people like myself and my wife who are avoiding WiFi for health reasons? I REALLY want to buy an iPad 2, but cannot justify getting a device that I cannot plug into my home Ethernet LAN. We're OK using WiFi while travelling, but our house/studio/office is a WiFI free zone. We're actually thinking about getting a Toshiba Netbook precisely because we don't want to carry our MacBook on long trips when we need to pack very light.
Then you won't be able to use the iPad on a network, I'm afraid. There is no way to connect an iPad to a network through a cable - only WiFi or 3G.
Agree.
We would like to use the iPAD to homeautomation (KNX kontroller), but try to avoid wifi.
Need LAN docking og USB to LAN adapter.
Trust apple soon solv this.

I HIGHLY doing this will be "solved".
Why create a portable, wireless device then "solve" an issue by creating something that specifically is not wireless or portable?
1. WIFI = 2nd. best
2. Customers ask
3. Increase market
4. Reduce future claims
1. What?
2. What?
3. What?
4. What?
If you really want to use a wired connection, then you are best off with a netbook.
For many people, the appeal of the iPad is that it is wireless. I doubt that many customers are asking for a LAN connection for their iPad, as it is designed to be used wirelessly - if you need a LAN connection, then the iPad is not the device for you. As for Point 4 - are you seriously saying that Apple will be legally liable for choosing not to include a LAN connection?
Update for everyone who does not read about a device before they post about it. Airport Express is an ideal solution for your mobile problems.
"With the setup assistant built into iOS 5 and OS X Lion, you’re just a few taps or clicks away from setting up a new wireless network or extending your current one."

Which is why Meg suggested that to the OP higher up in this thread - in April. 🙂
