Does anyone know if my ipad will connect to the net via ethernet ? I'll be in Alaska for the summer and the only way to the net will be via phone line 😟 My question is will a usb to ethernet adapter get me on line with my ipad ?

Unless you plan on buying a convertible laptop/tablet, most if not all dedicated Tablets do not have an Ethernet port. And yes you may be able to use a USB to rj45 ethernet card, but again not on dedicated tablets. More than likely on the higher end laptop/tablets which can handle drivers for them.

Also when have laptops , which are designed to be carried around, become so cumbersome?

And why is it that an iPad, must do everything? If a different device does what you need, use that. Instead of trying to shoehorn functionality that was never planned or designed on a device just because you want to show off to everybody with your shiny new iPad.

I am more than happy to have to use an adapter from say Lightning to Ethernet, much like the MicroUSB to Ethernet that I would need to use on a Windows tablet, most of which will support.

The iPad doesn't have to do everything, but wouldn't you want it too? I would love to carry one device that can do anything that I need it to do, rather than 3 or 4, for specific purposes.

I see there is a little more action on this post, but only from commenters.

BTW, do you think that Apple designed its Audio Jack to be used as a credit-card swiping input?

Do I think they designed it explicitly for that? No. But since it is designed for control input via the head phone controls, accepting input for credit card streams from a dedicated peripheral to a specific app would not be a stretch. Doesn't have much to do with current conversation, however.

To date I have put over 300 iPad's or iPad mini's into industrial manufacturing plants. We use WiFi. Often times we will use an Airport Extreme or Airport Expresses as the Access Point. It's a inexpensive way to get the devices onto our network. We do not use them for surfing the net, we use them for real time OEE and Andon in manufacturing. For $99 you can buy a powerful Express. How much would an Ethernet Adapter cost $49-$79? Just use the Express......

Again what we do is use inexpensive access points and put it on our network so the devices can communicate with a server in our case. AndOnMobile.com Notice the name is not andonmobile stationary. Mobile means exactly that, mobile.

As far as tablets, he's right you better be careful because 95% of them only come with a USB port. You can however add the USB to Ethernet adapter and set it to a Static IP address and it will stay there all the time. A good example is the Windows Surface. We use them in lieu of iPad's sometimes, not because of the Ethernet port, but because of customer selection.

If any of you guys ever figure out how to get an iPad connected on a wired gigabit connection, please let me know :-)

If you want to get sneaky, you can setup the Express or Extreme not to broadcast it's wireless SSID in the setup. This way you take your Ethernet connection (wired) plug it into the Express, set the Express up to not show it's SSID then tell the iPads what network to connect to and you are good to go. The only way anyone would ever know the network even existed was if they brought in a network sniffer. So in laymans terms you can create a hidden network 2.4/5GHz with mimo, without anyone ever really knowing it's there. We have done this a couple of times to sneak around corporate IT "issues". The Express is $99 while the Extreme I believe is $229 now. Both work excellent. Just an idea for you to think on.......
