ITunes won't run on W7 - The colour scheme has been changed

I have been installing and uninstalling iTunes for sometime now and have even tried to change the theme but I keep getting the same message.

I've gone back 14 pages on this part of the forum and haven't come across a similar thread so apologies if anyone has already asked and if you can point me in the correct direction.

I have an iPod and iPhone that need to be updated as I've had this problem for around 6 months now since getting a new laptop.

The hardware is a Packard Bell 64bit running Windows7

Windows 7, 64bit

The color scheme has been changed.
The following program has performed an action that required Windows to temporarily change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic.

Program iTunes
Publisher Apple Inc
Process Indentifier (PID):532

Windows will automatically change the color scheme back to Windows Aero when this program or other programs performing similar actions are no longer running.

Thanks in advance.

Gosh, that is a strange one ... I think I've seen it reported for safari, once, but I'm not 100% sure of that either.

Okay ... I think we might as well try believing the message, to begin with. Since iTunes doesn't normally do this on Windows 7, then it seems possible that there's some subtle damage to your iTunes program files (or the related programs' program files).

Have you tried a complete uninstall/reinstall of iTunes and related software as per the following document?

[Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923]

If you haven't, and you do, does iTunes start launching without that message?

I have uninstalled and installed countless times but followed the instructions on the link provided to ensure that I was doing it correctly and I uninstalled in the order as presented by Apple and checked the c: and all is/was in order.

I restarted my machine and reinstalled iTunes and once again I have the same message.

To say I'm frustrated is a massive understatement.

Googling around a bit, this problem seems to have been reported in relation to qttask.exe

If you have the Quicktime icon in the system tray, try turning it off in Quicktime Preferences>>Advanced tab.
Uncheck "Install Quicktime icon in system tray".

I would be interesting to know if this works for you, but I haven't found a reason for the problem.

I have this exact issue and more! I have also reinstalled more times than I wish to count. Glad to see I am not the only one!

When I start iTunes on my desktop computer, instantly it switches to Windows 7 Basic Color mode:

"The color scheme has been changed

The following program has performed an action that requires Windows to temporarily change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic.

Program: iTunes

Publisher: Apple Inc.

Process indentifier (PID): 3296

Windows will automatically change the color scheme back to Windows Aero when this program or other programs performing similar actions are no longer running."

When I close iTunes, it immediately switches back.

THEN, when I try and move a movie I have recently downloaded ("Tangled (2010)" or "Tron: Legacy") to my iPad (1st edition) or iPod Touch, iTunes tells me these devices are not supported:

"Tangled (2010) was not copied to the iPad "My iPad" because it cannot be played on this iPad."

I get the same message with "Tron". This is only happening with the movies I have downloaded after February. All previously downloaded movies work just fine. I have found when I transfer the new files to my laptop and use iTunes on there, everything works normally.

New for today...

When I plug the iPod Touch into the the desktop computer, iTunes locks up completely. I only get it back when I unplug the iPod.

Solutions...

I have done minimal talking via email with iTunes support. They told me to make sure I had the updated version of everything. I had explained in my original inquiry I had done that already. When I replied as such, I did not get a reply. I sent several messages explaining that I have deleted itunes all together from my computer and reinstalled the program from scratch. Finally, I received a second reply to reinstall iTunes.

Also, I have tried several ways of moving the movies over to the iPad and iPod: dragging/dropping, sync, auto sync. I get the same error message every time.

I am more than a little frustrated with Apple's lack of support and hope someone out there knows something that can be done. PLEASE HELP!

found the Aero fix....

open Quicktime

Edit>

Preferences>

Quicktime Preferences>

Advanced Tab>

switch from DirectX to safe Mode (GDI only)

This fixed the Aero Safe mode issue. Although it shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. I don't get it.

I still have an issue with the iPad or iPod not being recognized as viable video sources.

Hi everyone,

I have almost the same problem meaning the color scheme in W7 has changed when ..... in my case, safari starts.... it seems that is one effect from many causes, well I dug a bit arround and came across the folowing :

Why are some visual elements being automatically turned off?

If you receive a message that some visual elements, such as window frame transparency, have been turned off, or if you receive a message that the theme has been changed to the Basic theme, one of the following might have happened:

  • A program that you're running is incompatible with Aero themes. When this happens, some visual elements are automatically turned off. When the program is no longer running, the visual elements that were turned off are turned on again automatically.
  • Your laptop might be running low on battery power. Windows might turn off Aero themes or window transparency to save battery power.
  • Your computer's hardware configuration or screen resolution was changed. If you changed your screen resolution, video card, or monitor setup, your computer might no longer meet the minimum recommendations for running Aero themes.
  • Your computer doesn't have enough memory to run all of the programs that you have open and also run an Aero theme. If Windows automatically changed your theme to the Basic theme, and you want to change it back to an Aero theme, close some windows to free up memory, and then follow the steps below.

To use an Aero theme

If the troubleshooter doesn't fix the problem, try changing the theme back to an Aero theme.

  1. User uploaded fileClick to open Personalization.
  2. Under Aero Themes, click a theme to apply it to your desktop.

To run the Aero troubleshooter

  • To try to get visual elements like transparency running again, use the Aero troubleshooter, which can find and fix problems automatically.

  • User uploaded fileClick to open the Aero troubleshooter. User uploaded file If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To learn more about the Windows 7 desktop features that use Aero elements, see What is the Aero desktop experience?

I had run the Aero troubleshhoter and got the problem, not sure if will saty like this, but the result of the scan says: Desktop Window manager is disabled, which was fixed by the troubleshooter, I have no ideea if this DWM will stay as fixed, next time I start Safari or not, but give it a try.

Hope this might solve it

Hi, it seems it doesn't change anything, I tried closing and openning the safari, hoping that the answer I gave earlier was right, it wasn't ...funny for three times safari was closed and open without having any change in windows color scheme , only the fourth time it starts changing back to basic when safari starts, and to aero when I quit safari.

I also tried the solution above (see seabbott ) in which some changes were made to quicktime, THAT is working for safari as well, but as was said it shouldn't be an issue in the first place, didn't get it either.

Sorry for any inconvenience made with my first reply.

I was having a problem where when I would turn on itunes it would immediately change the windows 7 color scheme to basic and then a couple of seconds later it would change it back. It would do that every minute or so. I saw someone say to make sure compatibility was turned off on itunes.exe and ituneshelper.exe. Compatibility was off, but I wondered what would happen if I turned it on, since there was a setting for windows 7. I turned it on and so far the problem has been fixed.

So maybe try turning compatibility on for your version of windows.
