Nikon d3100 - iPhoto imports photos but shows error message over and over

I'm having trouble importing photos from my Nikon d3100.

When I plug it in and turn it on, iPhoto doesn't launch automatically. When I launch it, then it prepares to download the photos.

When I click import, the photos download but I have to click cancel over and over again for each photo " The Volume for DSC_BLABLA.jpg cannot be found." Eventually all the photos download, but it's really annoying.

I've reformatted it on the camera, but can't reformat on the mac because the camera doesn't mount as a disk in disk utility.

Does anyone have any idea why this problem is happening? How can I fix it? None of my other cameras have this issue.

I don't really want to get a card reader if I don't have to.

imac - 2.0ghz core duo, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Nikon d3100

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you tried using Image Capture to upload the image files to your hard drive? See if you can upload to a folder on the Desktop where you can then name the folder what you want the Event title to be. Then drag the folder into iPhoto to import. Although an extra step it will assure you get the files onto the hard drive safely before removing them from the memory card with the camera.

This sometimes occurs if you’re importing a file into iPhoto and there’s already a file there with the same name. Digital cameras can produce many, many files with the same name over their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to have several files called IMG_00543.JPG, for instance. Now you want to import one also called this.

What happens is that iPhoto compares the two files to check for duplicates. However, if iPhoto cannot find the file already in the database for comparison, then you get this message. It suggests that your database is damaged because iPhoto has lost track of this (or these) similarly named files.

A simple test is to rename the file you are importing - just add a character - IMG_00543a.JPG for instance. If this then imports with no issue then you might consider rebuilding your library:

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
