Sync iPhone to new computer - Questions for not loosing stuff

Hello,

I have a question and I hope you guys will be able to help me.
My GF doesn't have access to her old computer. However, I have a Mac Laptop that I never used to sync my own iPhone, so she will use this laptop to sync her iPhone.

To make sure she doesn't loose any music on her iPhone, I will use a 3rd Party software to make sure everything is saved (copy pasted).
For the contacts, I need to pray that iTunes sync won't delete everything. But this is not THAT bad... However if you guys have any tips I would appreciate.

For the apps I am not sure. I know I can "Transfer Purchase", which is cool. But I really need to make sure that she doesn't loose her progress in Smurf.

I would like some help from you guys to make sure what would be the correct step-by-step to make sure that no Application Data is lost.

Thank you for your help and I am available to any questions you guys have to help me solve this question.

(I have the latest iTunes and Mac OS installed)

iPhone 3GS, Mac OS X (10.6.7), MacBook

By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from her phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are replacing your GF's computer, her phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to her phone or music ripped on her own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from her phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:

http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php

Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:

1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under Preferences>Devices in itunes(under the edit menu if using Windows).
2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book, iCal) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
3. Connect her phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
4. Store>Authorize this computer.
5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on her phone will be in her itunes library).
6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
7. Right click again and select backup.
8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore her itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding her contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.

You should be good to go.

Just had this same thing happen to me with my new laptop. Spent 50 min on the line w/ Apple Care, he went to put me on hold and get a sup and disconnected me. In the mean time, found this on another blog and it worked! Basicially you can indeed manually delete all music off the phone, from the settings, them check mark all your new music and sync. It worked.

If you a Mac user, please refer this article about How to transfer contents from iPhone to new Mac.

Good luck!

I had a wonderful surprise after a house fire damaged my computer which I used o sync my iphone, ipad and itouch. Before the fire, I had backed up all my files with Carbonite. After I purchased a new computer, I restored all my files from Carbonite back into my new computer and then I downloaded the newest iTune. When I connect my iphone to my new computer, iTune came on automatically. I noticed that all my songs, apps and other contents are already there. then, iTune asked me if I want to activate the new computer, which I did. Voila, my iphone synced with my computer, transferred all my purchases and I did not lose a thing.

So, I am a firm believer of Carbonite now. This got me thinking, if you can still access your old hard drive, may be you can back it up with Carbonite or other online backup service and then restore everything to your new computer and see if that works for you.

best of luck.

Just to let all peopel know if they don't yet.I have this same problem, however with regard to photos (as in Camera roll), if you plug your iphone into a computer (even a new one), ou then get the promt for the auto run stuff, click open in windows explorer, then you should get the file (DCIM i think its called), then just copy and past that file onto your desktop, and no you have your photos. Im still not sure if its possible to get the music off though. Just that mite help some people.

There's a really simple solution to this at the link below.

The solution on this forum post seemed much too complicated to me, so I continued searching. Turns out there's a way to do the transfer in a few steps by copying and pasting two folders and one file from the old computer to the new. Doesn't require any third party software or anything like that. I felt compelled to post it here since this was the first place my Google search brought me. Hopefully this link will help those of you who had the sense to check further along in this thread for a better answer.

Also going to copy and paste the solution for Mac users in case the link goes down. Credit goes to OSXDaily.

Before you do this, note that if you only want to sync and not worry about content, the /MobileSync/Backup/ directory is all you need to copy over

1. Quit iTunes on both Macs and disconnect the iPhone from both Macs

2. Open the Home folder and copy the iTunes directory from the old computer to the new one, located at

~/Music/iTunes

3. Now open the user library directory and copy the backups from the old computer to the new one, located at

~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/

4. To be certain everything is in order, copy over iTunes Preferences files as well:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist

5. Now connect the iPhone to the new Mac, launch iTunes, confirm that everything is in order, and authorize the new computer

I thought I had a similar problem but need some more help.

Facts:

Got my first iphone 3g, found out it was 'jailbroken' - got service through Tmobile (no apple support and phone is too old for apple to support either). Found out that I couldn't run updates or it would shut down my phone. OK, no worries...just don't do updates. Had tons of music (mostly from my own CDs in itunes on PC and then on iphone), tons of photos, use the calendar on iphone (Outlook on PC) and other apps/info too numerous to mention. I was able to sync everything to my pc regularly. Then,

Crashed the PC, bought a new one. Then I couldn't sync because since I had no itunes (from my CDs) and if I did try to sync, was told that the zero music on my new PC would override the tons of music on my iphone and I would lose it all. OK, had to live with that. Reloaded a lot of music on my PC but it is not the same batch on my iphone. I would like to have BOTH sets of music...I digress. Then,

I have to breakdown and get the new iphone 5. Now all my problems are solved EXCEPT, they are not. I can't figure out how to get my calendars, music, or text messages from my old iphone to my new one.

Saw your post to buy Touch Copy which I did for PCs. When I tried to copy my calendar, it is showing it as an iCal which I think is for a mac. It copied it alright...NOT. I see a lot of my appointments but the times are all wrong. I am afraid to go further.

Questions all involve how to migrate all of my old iphone info to my new iphone and how I can then sync new iphone info to my PC:

1. What do I do first and step by step?

2. Can I use Touch Copy in my situation or did I waste $25?

3. Can I get the incorrect calendar out of Outlook? I have Office 2010.

Can you HELP?? Desperate for a solution. Thanks!

Morning,

I reloaded my Mac but transferred all of my iTunes content over to the new installation.

iPhone syncs and connects perfectly except for 1 issue in thst if I update an App in iTunes it will not sync that latest version back to my iPhone.

I have tried the instructions of backup / restore the iPhone but I am still left with that issue.

Anyone have any idea's?
