Setting up without the apple tv remote

I have brought my apple tv to my friends house and was going to control apple tv with 'Remote' off my iPhone. I did not bring the remote that came with the apple tv as I was going to do it all with the iPhone. However I now cannot seem to get the apple tv to do anything. I am in a different part of the country so I can't go back and get the remote.

Is there anyway to use my iPhone to allow me to set up apple tv in my friends house? I need to connect to their network and to my knowledge I have no way of doing this. I can see apple tv on the screen but can't set it up.

Help!

Thanks!

Ok I have this problem, but with an added difficulty:

The iPhone I used before to control the Apple TV has been reset.

The Apple TV unit has also been restored to its factory settings.

Now, I'm trying to do this by using an iPhone 5 on a wireless network, and connecting the Apple TV to the router creating it, via ethernet cable.

It doesn't show up on the iPhone remote list of devices.

I'm stuck on the language selection screen on the Apple TV (Because I already have it connected to a TV and the image IS working)

I want to summarise all tips in one short post:
If you have Apple TV and always loosing the remote, it is good to remember that:

  • you can pair almost any remote to your Apple TV (including IR remote of your TV - this is how-> Use a third-party remote with your Apple TV - Apple Support . But native is needed in most cases (for ex., to open Settings, so maybe it is better to pair at least one external remote beforehand)
  • you can use your iPhone/iPad/iPod or Android phone as a remote (just need to get the proper app, ex Remote by Apple)
  • If Apple TV is not displaying in the list of found devices on your phone, it is most likely in different local networks (ex, WiFi) with your phone. If you do not have remote to change WiFi or type password, you can connect your Apple TV to Internet directly via Ethernet cable.
  • If you can`t connect Remote app to your Apple TV, check your iPhone with app installed and your Apple TV are connected to one network, your Apple TV device is assigned to your iTunes account and Home Sharing is turned ON. More tips from Apple here-> If the Remote app won’t connect to iTunes or your Apple TV - Apple Support
  • Recently found one more solution - If you have Android phone without IR support, you can try Apple TV remote free: CiderTV app in Google Play. It works on phone with no infrared blaster. By the way this app has iOS version for iPhone, that also controls TV volume and Mac OS X version, that can pair CiderTV for iOS without native Remote at all
  • To start pairing apps without native Remote, your Apple TV need to be turned ON. If it is not (and you do not have remote to do it) - for example, you can plug out-plug in physical power cord.
  • To prevent turning your Apple TV off - in Settings menu set never go to sleeping mode

Hope it will be helpful for someone. I would be glad if someone had told me this before
