I'm wary of straying off-topic but it may be worth asking yourself if you really need to run Windows XP Professional x64 Edition? Just because you can doesn't neccessarily mean you should. For many consumer oriented task you will not see any noticeable performance increase. In fact some processor operations require more stages in the pipeline to complete with a 64bit integer than a 32bit integer and you will actually see a drop in performance. Not to mention the fact that just because an application comes in a 64bit flavour it may not neccessarily provide any enhancement over its 32bit counter part.

You haven't stated why you are using a 64bit architecture but it may be worth re-evaluating your need for it and switching back to 32bit windows to save yourself any further headaches like this in the future. Remember, bigger is not always better.

I have no insider knowledge but i would hazard a guess that it is unlikely apple will release a 64bit version of itunes or its ipod drivers. There just isn't any demand for it. Major windows developers are still not releasing 64bit products!

Dont mind the diversion 😉
Know what you are driving at - however a big reason developers arent producing 64bit versions yet is because the lack of DRIVERS is holding consumers off the platform. Also the application developers dont NEED to have 64bit application for the customer to be able to use... (Note - we dont really care if apple releases a 64bit iTunes - the 32 bit works fine, it is the 32 bit iPod driver that is an issue).

And with things like the next Exchange release only coming in 64bit the move should be on its way. Coupled with there being NO upgrade path from 32bit to 64bit and it starts to make sense to use XP64

Even if the next version of exchange is 64bit only its not even due to release 1H07, very few users will switch to it straight away, most will wait on SP1 which will probably be 1H08 so i reckon it'll be a couple of years before we see major 64bit uptake outside of the science sector.

Agree with you on the drivers though - they are the main problem. It seems like a catch 22 - oem's don't put much effort into x64 drivers because no-one is really using it and no one really uses it because the driver support is rubbish!

Just to let you know, I gave it a try and installed the current iPod Updater 3.1.1 and iTunes 6.0.3. Works without a single problem.

The nice thing is iTunes takes advantage of the dual core CPU, which means ripping and encoding in full CD extraction speed 😉

My specs:

- iPod Click Wheel 20GB
- Win XP Pro x64 Edition
- Gigabyte K8NF9 Deluxe (nForce 4)
- AMD 64 X2 4400+
