System 7.5.3

Hey guys, I can't seem to get the System 7.5.3 download from apple website to work. For some reason after I download all the .smi files they don't join together. This is the link that I'm tring to download it from:
http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Olde r_System/System_7.5_Version7.5.3/

Has anyone been able to get this to work? Thanks!

Hi,

As Grant mentioned, begin by transferring the downloaded files unaltered to the hard disk on the old Macintosh computer (that is, keep the MacBinary = .bin encoding intact). For this transfer you could use 1.44 MB floppy disks or a CD.

Once on the older machine, use StuffIt Expander 4.0.1 or 5.5 for the decoding of the nineteen .bin files. StuffIt Expander 4.0.1 can be found, for example, here, but one problem is that the download has been encoded, and that StuffIt Expander is needed for the decoding...

If necessary, ask someone to help you with a ready-to-use StuffIt Expander 4.0.1 or 5.5 installer (can often be found on CDs with older Mac magazines, too).

Ok, at the moment I have a Power Macintosh 5260/100 running System 7.5.3.The computer hardware and software is completely original. However, the person who had it previously had deleted some of the software and kinda messed things up. So, I was trying to reinstall System 7.5.3 until I came across a System 9 CD that I have, but when I try to install System 9 from the CD the computer gives me this error: "Installation cannot occur while logged in as a non-owner. Please log in this owner privileges." How do I log in as the owner? I'd be grateful for any help!

This page has all the specs for 5260 on Apple's site. I believe you are right -- the ones labeled Power Mac do seem to go as high as 9.

Everymac.com says the PowerMac 5260 was sold into the Education Market, and the performa version was sold Retail worldwide.

What CD/DVD are you trying to use for this install? That error message sounds like you blundered into Mac OS X permissions issues?

NN117,

It sounds like you do not have the correct install CD.

Probably the best thing you can get for working on older macs is an external SCSI zip drive or hard drive enclosure. You can convert an external SCSI CD-ROM drive into a hard drive enclosure. Booting your computer from a CD is fine if you have the exact install CD for the machine or a universal install CD. External hard drives allow you more flexibility. Or, you can create zip disks with different system backups. It is not uncommon to get a message that says "this system will not operate this computer." If that is the case, you put in a different zip disk.

The whole point of this comment is to remind new commers that working on older computers requires 'tools of the trade.' The most powerful tool is the external SCSI drive port. If you can find a mac user group near you, you can get started with the right tools.

Maybe this can help, I made up a System 7 installer disk years ago for when I was still using Macintosh emulators. Perhaps you could burn it to a CD, it has everything needed to install System 7.5.3, with the unpacked System Software files from the Apple website, System 7.5.5 updater, Stuffit Expander 5.5, and Disk Copy 6.3.3. It's also bootable to a minimal install of 7.5.3, so if you can burn it to disk it should boot.
