How to create photo albums?

In the photo app, there is a selection called albums (plural).. yet, I can only see one album, and can't figure out how to create other albums and move my photos into other albums. (same seems to be true for the iPad).

How do I create and use multiple albums?

iMac 24, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

With your computer.

If you use iPhoto on your Mac for importing photos/videos from a digital camera including from your iPhone's Camera Roll and for photo storage and management on your Mac, you probably already have iPhoto albums and depending on the iPhoto version, events and faces as well. If not, you can create iPhoto albums as easy as creating an iTunes playlist for music. Under the Photos tab for your iPhone and iPad sync preferences with iTunes, select Sync with iPhoto. You can choose all photos, albums, events, and faces, or choose selected albums, events, and faces. Select the iPhoto albums and/or events and faces below followed by a sync.

The iphone user guide really does not talk about creating and managing photos with albums.. at least not that I can see.

I really don't use iPhoto to manage my photos. Is there no other way to work with albums directly on the iphone or ipad?

Then you should give iPhoto a try. You can use it for importing photos from any digital camera including from your iPhone's Camera Roll with photos organized by Events and Albums along with the Faces feature. Much easier for backing up all photos on your computer as well.

There is no such option with the iPhone. Photo albums are created on your computer with an app like iPhoto or manually.

There IS a whole chapter on the subject, but it focuses on iPhoto for Mac, which is the best way.

If you REALLY don't want to use iPhoto create a folder on your Mac. In this folder create a sub-folder for each album. Copy the photos you want in each album into the sub-folder for that album. Connect the phone, and in iTunes click on the Photos tab. Check the box to sync photos and select the top level folder you created. When you sync each sub-folder will become an album with the same name as the sub-folder name. The order of the photos will be alphabetical by file name.

And I have tried to use iPhoto, and absolutely hate it. I come from a PC environment, where I like to have complete control of my work, and that included creating and maintaining my own folders, and knowing at all times where my data is. The Mac tries to over-simplify things for dummies and in the end, I have no idea where it is putting my files. Please don't try to convince me to use it - I have tried several times now, and I just hate it.

There are other apps for the iphone and ipad, for example, QuickOffice, which allows me to create and manage folders and files - I don't know why I can't do the same with Photos. Wouldn't be that hard to do.

If you read my message I told you how to do what you want. If that doesn't work there are many 3rd party apps that will do it also.

You could try Aperture but I think you would have the same problem. You might want to consider selling your computer and going back to a PC then arranging your photos that way.

Download <91 pc suite> and install it on your computer.then connect your iphone to pc and lunch 91 pc suite.Click on management-> pictures on there you can do everything that you whant!

Here is another discussion thread that shows you how to make your own albums on a PC and iTunes and skip iPhoto completely.

It still requires that you use a computer to create them. I find this restriction completely baffling but it is what it is and short of jailbreaking your phone there is not a way around it.

I have been using using Mac since at least MacOS 4. However, I find most of the iLife applications too restrictive to my liking. If you like them then you love them. But if you want to do something a little different then you are out of luck.

If you don't want to use iPhoto, there is another way. Connect your iPhone to your computer and navigate to the Photos tab for your iPhone. Put a checkmark into the box labelled "Sync Photos from" and then use the dropdown box to select "Choose folder". Navigate to the folder where you have stored the photos you would like to put on your phone. Sync. You should be good to go. 🙂

I completely agree with u apple should add this functionality asap. I have found that the ipad excels without the need to constantly connect with a pc. I want to be abke to sort my albums out while out on holiday.

Actually, there is an app called Photo Shack Pro that allows you manage and organize your photos directly from your iPad's "Photos" library. You can create your own libraries and albums, add and sort your photos in them, add titles and comments to your photos, and view your photo's detailed embedded photo metadata - which is a lot more than iOS 5 will bring. It also allows you to zoom in to full resollution all the way up to 16 megapixels. I use it and I think it's a great way to manage, view, and inspect your photos without having to privatize them away from all of your other apps. Seems to pick-up well where the iPad's "Photos" app leaves off.
