hey guys, i use this solution for inserting a division symbol on an iOS device.... first you need to have an apple wireless keyboard. now, instead of activating a secondary keyboard (Japanese) as stated in some of the above post, go into settings and go to keyboard shortcuts, once there create a new keyboard shortcut, but here is where the actual wireless keyboard comes into play, use your apple wireless keyboard to input the text, in the phrase entry field use the shortcut (option + ?) this will insert the actual division symbol ( ÷ ) in the shortcut entry field input what TWO characters work for you, i use ( // ) remember you have to use TWO.
this tip wil work for any of the mathematical symbols you need to use, but are not built into iOS
You are right, the "Japanese Fifty Key" keyboard is not available anymore in iOS version 5.1.1.
But as you found out for yourself, the ÷ sign is also available on the "Japanese Kana" keyboard.
For feedback regarding this subject, contact Apple directly using this method:

There is really no need for a wireless keyboard. You can copy/paste all the symbols available in iOS by using an app like Symbola or Unicode Map.
An additional option is that once you type the division symbol using the Japanese Kana keyboard, you can then copy it and set a keyboard shortcut. I just set "dv" to ÷ auto-expand to and you can do this without having to keep the Japanese keyboard enabled. 😉
The keyboard shortcut is my favorite method too. If you can copy/paste it to keyboard shortcuys you can add it. Just like this micon symbol. μ.
The simplest solution is to create a keyboard shortcut in the iPad settings. I created "dividedby" (no spaces allowed for shortcuts). So whenever I want the ÷ symbol, I just type "dividedby", and it automatically changes the words to the symbol. No special keyboard needed. Easy.
That said, it is annoying that a very common math symbol isn't readily available on the English keyboard. I certainly use it more often than the degree symbol (°), which is available on the keyboard, because I talk about numbers (money matters, etc.) in emails far more often than I talk about the weather.
...on second thought, a better shortcut would be "-/-," which mimics the ÷ symbol.
I use ds as my shortcut for a ÷ . I'm just checking to see if the shortcut posts.
Edit. Success !
