Final Cut Pro X

I guess that as Apple has told the world about FCP 10 then (basic) questions can be asked....

1) Do you still need to (officially) transcode into Quicktime? or will it handle say DVCPro HD natively?
2) Is there upgrade pricing or does everyone pay $299 regardless
3) A video I saw had the presenter refer to FCP 10... if I'm using the latest which is 7 where did 8 & 9 go?
Cheers

Although FCPX looks very cool and revolutionary and all, the OMF would be my main concern too.
How too organise dialogue on track 1 to 4, music on 5 to 8, effects on 9 and 10, etc? Especially with all those compound clips and automatic out-of-the-way audio tracks.
Not saying it will be impossible in FCPX, but just wondering how that will be possible?

Here's one thing I'm interested in learning...What will Apple's approach to licensing be? I have bought my last version of Adobe Creative Suite after a horrible fumble on their part that cost me over $300 with me getting absolutely nothing for it and no satisfaction from Adobe. On top of that my motherboard recently died and after the replacement I had to go through an excruciatingly long call to India where they explained I could no longer do any installations. Period. They relented but explained there would be no further installs.

I wonder if the "download only" is going to mean the install will be tied to a computer like a drm itune song? THAT would be a product I would not purchase but Apple doesn't have history of that so it's only a worry at this time. For folks that don't touch their machine it's relatively unimportant but for those that install three new internal drives and a new video card that makes the program think it's a different computer every three months in spite of the mac address remaining stable...it's a deal breaker. I doubt anyone knows the situation with the new FCP app, but the entire "download only" thing is worrysome. I understand deauthorizing so no need to toss that out....

Not pleased that it is download only. As of date, I do not own a single program downloaded from the Mac store, and Im pretty sure that trend will continue. It's just too invasive. Not to mention, it's starting to seem like Apple wants choice taken away at every gate. Moving the "creative" environment they create to the consumer environment of the ipad is just plain stiffling. And thinking -- the install of FCP 7 takes like 50GB. We're going to download that -- or just get the normal content left out ?

As a licensed Studio 7 user, I'm pretty sure if there is no benefit to the 1k I spent, that my future money is probably going with Adobe. I know the usualy upgrade price is 299, so I'm not losing anything -- but if everyone pays that price, then I am losing the club membership I originally paid a lot of money for -- and given that every one has to own photoshop anyway, production suite is starting to look a LOT more existing customer friendly.

Fellow Editors,

We have no idea what the "Final" incarnation of this software will become. Granted some features are what we have hoped for and some are not. Whether it's part of "Suite" or not is yet to be revealed. I know its fun to speculate and prognosticate but it all remains to be seen. Its technology, its moving fast and we all have to keep up. So lets enjoy that we are all part of this creative community and that we are alive to even be a part of this discussion. Let's not forget that this software is just a tool to help "storytellers" tell their stories. Whether that be imovie, final cut, adobe premier, avid, or lightworks. Its all the same ****. Lets make good films and tell some good stories.

I have to agree to a certain extent.... the Apple App Store only delivery method concerns me but at the moment I'm prepared to sit tight and wait and see what Apple has in store for the other suite applications.

Looking at say iLife/iWork you used only to be able to buy the whole suite but now you can get the apps individually. I benefited as I was able to buy the app I wanted i.e. Numbers at a good price without having to pay for the ones that I didn't. Its also interesting to note that these apps don't have upgrade prices!

Thing is with FCPX costing $299 theres no room for Apple to finesse the price to make the usual upgrade price point without giving the other suite apps for 'free'. I'm happy not to get DVD Studio as I don't use it but the other apps i.e. Motion and Color etc are for me MUST HAVES so if I'm going to have to pay a few hundred $ for each then I'd need to at the very least re-evaluate my options. BTW I just can't see that Apple has integrated all or even most of these apps functionality into FCPX

The market for FCPX will explode at $299 as many many con/prosumers will find enough in it to buy it... they won't need or want say the power and control of say Color..... its hard at the moment not to see that this will come at the expense of Suite users.

Apple has time and time again done things which appear counter intuitive yet in hindsight when all the dust has settled its played a blinder..... as I said I'm happy to sit tight and see what happens!

As a trainer and consultant, if I had a nickle for every student/client that called me crying over lost DVDs and license numbers when trying to install on new machines, I'd own every Trump Tower in the world by now. I applaude and love the Mac App Store. Invasive? No more than when you fill out the registration window of your DVD based installations.

Drive crashes, machine stolen, studio burns down, upgrading to newer Macs, etc, etc, etc. I've dealt with it all. And simply loging into the Mac App Store and re-downloading is wonderful. "You already bought this, do you want to download it again for free?" Yes I do, thank you very much!

Why do so many folks fear progress, and why do so many equate difficult with professional? Difficult and old has nothing to do with professional.

I was actually at the SuperMeet sneak peak, and I did not see anything at all that was NOT fully professional, nor anything to indicate we would lose anything at all.

Intel and Snow Leopard were made clear that was the FCP X spec, and it will scale from a MacBook Pro to an iMac to a Tower. That was clearly stated. Grand Central will use whatever resources your Mac has, as few or as much as it has, and that's as simple as it gets.

Let the speculation about how all of our business will fail continue, I guess...
