Final Cut Pro X

I guess that as Apple has told the world about FCP 10 then (basic) questions can be asked....

1) Do you still need to (officially) transcode into Quicktime? or will it handle say DVCPro HD natively?
2) Is there upgrade pricing or does everyone pay $299 regardless
3) A video I saw had the presenter refer to FCP 10... if I'm using the latest which is 7 where did 8 & 9 go?
Cheers

Lol. Maybe you guys would be more at home at the Adobe forums?

Personally, I still use FCP7 every single day alongside all of our other editors at my place. It's a shocker I know, but it actually still works exactly the same as it always did. I/we still meet every deadline, and continue to meet and exceed our clients expectations. Until I literally cannot edit on it, I see no reason to switch from FCP7. And as all of our sequences are Pro Res, I don't see any compatibility issues coming any time soon.

IMHO, why would I change workflows for the sake of having the newest version of a piece of software? To tell a story is to tell a story, and I don't believe for a second that the latest Avid/Premiere enables the user to create a more compelling, creative, unique end product than someone using an earlier version of any NLE.

But hey, that's just me ;)

I read that too, that Lion has problems, or adobe with Lion.

@Chazfest - you have right - you can make everything on Premiere/Avid what you can make on FCP7, and vice versa. But there is no more updates, upgrades for FCP7. Will you stay forever with that? Film industry will be changing, brodecast media also. In my opinion the faster you will switch the better. I think more about future now.

And as I wrote before - you can open FCP files in Premiere Pro, but not in FCPX - Monty Python...

I am so glad to see this thread back. FWIW I am still using FCS 3 everyday (nothing has changed). I have bought 2 copies of FCPX and dabbled in it but have not quite had enough time to sit down and learn it, although I will. Quite honestly, after having been forced to use Premiere for two years about two years ago, I will stop editing if Premiere is my only option. I cursed it everyday for two years and NEVER will it see the light of day on any computer I have control of.

Today, yes, TODAY - Apple released the FCPX XML api's. So, today I start writing in my convertors for you all to enjoy. I've been checking back every day, often more than twice a day, to see if it was available. Now we can make it a fully usable tool.

First on the list is getting Fcp 5,6 and 7 into X. Next getting X out to STP And EDL.

The app store is full of FCPX!! With the tag "Updated with New PRO Features"

such as:

Export AV stems!

Import/Export XML

XSan support

Custom starting TC

Single step transition adding, incl for Audio!!

Full screen view in Lion

Motion also gets an update, mostly performance based though

BTW, if your machine is having issues seeing it as an update (check this by going to the Purchased section on the AppStore and choose Install on FCP on the list) you will likely have to remove the old version of FcpX from your Apps folder, empty the trash then choose install from the Purchased section of the AppStore. This is more so the case when installing on multiple machines from the single account.

Happy beta testing, round two!

And then on the very next day after you returned to mention something about there being no FC X updates...

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/20/apple-releases-major-update-and-free-trial-f or-final-cut-pro-x/

And although I haven't yet read this PDF (linked below) in its entirety, I do think that its very existence along with the updated improvements (and the 30-day free trial) can be interpreted as a hopeful sign from the dedicated team at Apple announcing by their pro-active actions as opposed to the dead echo of empty promises that a positive shift in momentum has been triggered. Some things asked for have already been provided (XML). Other things asked for will be provided later. Will it be too little too late? It depends on who you ask. But I for one am feeling a slight tinge of optimism slowly scattering the dark clouds of doom and dread that I devoured like a vegetarian vulture choking on the fruit of those tainted clouds as though savoring tasty crumbs of spoiled bread.

One thing I should say here about the XML - it only works with FCX. It exports FCX compatible XML and imports FCX compatible XML. Currently no other software works with it and Apple did not provide any conversion To/From FCP. They are hoping that third parties will provide the conversion for them.

So - while a step in the right direction toward being able to access FCP projects, it's a baby step.

EDLs are the same deal. Hopefully a third party will come up with a non-$500 solution, but it is further fallout of the "revolutionary" magnetic timeline. Without the ability to assign tracks, they don't know how to represent video layers to the EDL format. It's the same problem as OMF/AAF exports, with no tracks, they don't know how to export it (typically different tracks are assigned different functions - VO, EFX, Music, etc). The kludgepatch is the new "Roles" feature. I don't know if they were wise enough to extend that capability to video layers as well.

I totally agree.

BTW; has anyone seen my hot-splicer?

CatDV Pro 9.0 (US $395) is the ultimate solution for getting older FCP projects into FCP X using XML. At least that is what I initially believed based on something I read two days ago (someone's posted comment). But then I recently (a few minutes ago) found this information provided by the developers of CatDV (and it completely invalidates my prior notion as does your input):

Hello

For your information I wrote an applescript app to send FCP X project to Adobe After Effects with support for most of the magnetic timeline features :

main and secondaries storylines, anchored clips, time effects, audio levels, audio roles, scale, position, anchor point, rotation, opacity (all with with keyframes), cross fades and can also conform to RED raw files instead of .mov (it will upscale everything to full resolution)... more features are added frequently...

get all the details here : http://foolcolor.net/foolcut

I am also working on more tools, like :

FCP X to FCP 7 audio only XML (so you can then export an OMF with audio levels from FCP 7)

FCP 7 bins and clips to FCP X events

FCP 7 sequences to FCP X

FCP X beeing a trackless editor some of those conversions are very complex to keep everything as close as possible to the original so I cannot give any date yet for the other products but foolcut_AE works today (check out the screencast and try the demo version version from the website)

Have a good day
