OK, this topic is great! I had the exact same problem with my MPB early 2011 17". At first it happened while I was watching a movie. I paused it, led the lid open, and after a half hour pressed play. The movie continued, although with a black screen :-s
I thought it was because I made this incredible mistake by updating the EFI without the power cord attached. So at first I blamed that. Doing a SMC reset didn't solve the problem.
A week ago I installed Air Display. Since then it happened every time when I led the lid open and let the machine go into sleep mode by itself.
By uninstalling Air Display, the problem is simply gone!
Thanks so much for this topic! Totally made my day 🙂
One question to apple though: During my EFI upgrade my MBP kinda looped the first 10 seconds when you reboot. So that wasn't quite healthy. I had to press 'shut down' button for 5 seconds to put my computer off and reboot manually. I than did a software update (EFI update) the proper way, with the power cord installed. But could it be some system files are damaged?
I also tried to download EFI update from the 'support' section on apple's site, but it gives me this error:
"The software is not supported on your system".
Not sure if this problem belongs to this topic, but I wanna know if that's normal and maybe also had something to do with it.
Try to reboot in Single User mode then at the prompt: fsck -fy
Just like that. See if that helps. As far as the compatible message you saw - not sure unless EFI has been corrupted.
