Ringer volume keeps going to zero

Hi,

I own a 3GS and my husband just got a 4. We're having an issue with his ringer volume. It will go all the way down to 0 (or 1 bar). I went in an changed his settings so that the buttons can't change the volume (turned it to OFF) and raised the volume through the bar all the way up. Yet today while at work I kept getting his voice mail. He just called and yet again, the volume was at 1 bar so he didn't hear the phone ringing. When he went into settings the button option was still at OFF but the sound bar was all the way down. We can't figure out what is changing the volume. I don't have this issue on my phone (the 3GS). Is there something else we should be checking?

Would love input on this as I'm 7½ months pregnant and we really can't afford missed calls. 😉

That seems to be the problem- any AirPlay streaming seems to automatically set the ringer volume on the iOS device (in my case, on my iPhone 4 to volume level 4, when I start streaming to my Bose Companion 3 Speakers via AirPlay express).

Another message thread also mentions this specifically, but seems like there is no fix yet from Apple... - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4012771?start=0&tstart=0

Really hope they resolve this one. I was quite impressed with my Airport Express's ease of initial setup and use, but this bug is too frustrating considering how many calls I've already missed, and all the more so given Apple's established standards of intelligent devices.

I'm a pretty new iPhone user, so forgive any incorrect terminology.

I have been having seeing similar behavior in my iPhone 4s, iOS 5.1.1. (Possibly related or not, I have also noticed that the battery life seems to have been decreasing more quickly.) However, mine seems to only have been related to moving the phone in and out of the OtterBox holster. But I have found a link to the phone's hardware/software.

Prior to a reset I was able to manipulate the volume (up or down) even if the phone was "locked." (Locking the iPhone by pushing the On/Off button.) It did this while the screen was black. I.e., I would push the buttons one way or the other and even though the screen was black as soon as I hit the On/Off button it turned the screen on and there was the ringer volume on display showing what I had been doing.

I don't remember for certain, but I am pretty sure that just restarting it did not fix the problem. But after resetting the phone the volume no longer changed when I pushed the volume buttons while the phone was locked. A restart is done by holding down the On/Off button and then sliding the "slide to power off" and then turning the phone back on. A reset is done by simultaneously holding down the On/Off button and the Home button for 10+ seconds until the Apple logo appears.

It's only been 30 minutes since I did this, but all seems to be good. It may not be a solution for everyone with this problem, but I think it will be for some.

I'm having the same problem with my wife's iphone.

I upgraded a 4 to a 4s and passed along my 4 to my wife.

Soon after the transfer her phone (my old one that had never had this problem before) suddenly started to turn down the ringer and alerts volume.

We turned off the ringer buttons and locked the sound options and still had the same problems.

I reset the phone to factory settings and set up the phone again using ICloud. Still the problem kept happening.

Out of frustration I took her 4 to AT&T and upgraded it to a 4s.

You guessed it! After a few days her new 4s did the same thing. Ringer volume would go to zero and had to be reset by going to settings and then sounds and moving the slider back to max.

I accused her of doing something to the phone while putting it in and out of the holster untill I realized that the only way to turn the ringer volume down was to go the settings and sound and moving the slider. I doubt that she was inadvertantly making these three steps simply by holstering her phone.

Now I have swapped phones with her again. Because I know that my new 4s was not doing this.

If we have the same problem then I will know that it is not phone software or hardware but something that is following her with her AT&T account. This will be three phones that she has used and had the same problem.

Just got a call from the wife and her phone has turned itself again. That is the same issue with three different phones in one week. Two of the phones are new Iphone 4s'.

Went by the AT&T Store (again, trust me they know me very well now) and talked to a manager. We decided that the only things that were common to the issue 1) the AT&T account 2) the Iclouds account and all the settings that follow with it and 3) the SIM card.

So. We changed out the sim card with a new one and the manager found one setting that he changed.

Under Settings>Phone the TTY was set to on. He said that this setting can cause some strange problems.

So, we will try this for a few days and see if it helps any.

I'll keep you posted!

Yes, please do. I was able to stop the volume from being manipulated while locked by resetting the phone. However, it sometimes STILL goes to silent as it rings. I'm thinking mine has something to do with the holster since if I don't touch it the volume stays the same now that it is only while ringing. Over the weekend I am going to make several test calls and see if I can figure it out.

Well we went all day yesterday with out an incident. But arleady this morning it has happened again.

So this is three different phones (two of them brand new). With a new sim card. See two previous posts.

I nromally have a high frustion factor when it comes to these things. I love a good mystery. But I am at my wits end with this one.

I am calling Apple Support today to tell them my story.

Just curious is anyone else using a Otter Box Defender serirs case?

Recently, I stopped using Vibrate "On" alongside my ringer volume. It has been turned "Off" for a while. Since then, my voume appears to stay at the right setting. I don't know if this is a coincidence but I thought it would be worth noting for others, and hopefully, for Apple, as they have to fix this glitch.

Just got off of the phone with Apple support. After explaining the course of events over the last week. We decided that it has something to do with the Icloud backup. The premise being that the only thing common to all three phones tried this week was the Icloud backup.

So I reset the phone back to factory settings and deleted all data and settings.

Then restored the phone as a new phone. Downloaded all contacts and calendar from Icloud. So this did not use the Icloud backup for settings.

Will try this for the next few days and see if this works.

I also turned off the Vibrate along with ringer volume before this and that did not work.

Keep your fingers crossed!

The mystery is solved.

The problem was with my Otterbox Defencer case.

Whenever the phone was placed in the holder with the buttons down it woud ring once and then the volume would turn down. To test this I but another phone in the case button down and the volume would turn down after one ring but when placed in the case with the volume buttons up it would not turn the volume down. And it did this with both phones. This happens with the volume buttons turned off. Doen't make any sence to me but it happens.

Because it happened with different phones set up with my wife's settings I tryed to think of things that were common to her set up. They were 1) Her AT&T account 2) Her icloud settings that were downloaded when restoring her phone 3) Her SIM card and 4) her phone case. I noticed that it only happened when it was in her belt clip so I began to play aroung by calling her phone in the clip and out of the clip and low and behold I discovered the problem. When you place the phone in the clip with the volume buttons up the volume stays up.

So if any of you are using an Otterbox Defender case and using the belt clip, you might check this out for yourself.

I am going to call Otterbox first thing Monday morning.

I'll let you know what they say!
