Ipod only recognized as "unknown device"

My shuffle is not recognized in i-tunes and is only recognized as "unknown device" in device manager. I've tried alllll the r's in support, and the suggestions in these posts, nothing works for me. However I believe i need to add a new drive, because when plugged into the usb, there is still no other drive than c: / d:. yet it comes up under the usb connections in device manager.
Help:(

I am having this same problem. Here's the deal. I plug in my shuffle and the amber light blinks continuously. My computer does not recognize it - only as an 'Unknown Device' in the device manager. I cannot boot iTunes when my shuffle is in the USB port (it just wont start up) But when I remove the iPod from the USB port, I can start iTunes. If I am to plug in the shuffle after iTunes is booted, it doesn't recognize it at all.

I have tried all of the R's, installing the update, and nothing seems to work!!! I just got it and I really want to use it! Is there no one that can help us? Anyone have an answer?

HELP!

I had the same problem that I first noticed 10 days ago. I did everything including the 5 R's and then opened a service ticket with apple. They suggested that they send me a new shuffle and have me return mine. I received a new 1GB on Friday and returned my old shuffle the next morning. Everything was completed early this week and shipping was pre-paid by apple. Also, I purchased my IPOD last April (05).

Well although, I haven´t find the answer, I will tell you what happened to me.

I tried to update the ipod with the latest firmware, and now is not recognized in more than 4 different computers.

I reinstalled iTunes and the updater. And nothing

I tried with the live cd of ubuntu Linux, and it shows a dialogue box telling me that cannot be recognized too.

The ipod, charges when it´s connected, but displays the orange a green buttons when you push play.

I hope somebody find the answer.

I purchased 2 iPod Shuffles, and 1 mini for my kids.
I am now CRAZY! I thought this was supposed to be simple?

I followed the setup directions EXACTLY, when it got to the screen to check format on shuffle, I inserted Shuffle -- nothing happened -- thus began my headache.

After running test check the USB ports on computer, I have ascertained that:
the USB ports are acting fine and are operational.
the shuffle AND the mini are not recognized when plugged in.
I have downladed all updates still to no avail.
I have uninstalled all itunes programs, and repeated the process many times.
NOTHING works!

My son took his mini to school today, to see if his friend could get it setup for him, and download songs on it for him, since his mom is unable to. This is making me NUTS!

Does Apple have any live help that may be able to talk me through this? Or at least a person I can speak with to get help/acvice?

Here's the thing I have had this problem for only two days after receiving a new ipod back from apple. windows won't acknowledge the ipod in my usb port but in the device manager it shows up as a massive storage device.

Does apple have a problem with the driver for their products the only drivers I have in my file for apple products is laser printers no ipods at all also the massive storage device is using default driver.....

The other pproblem I just started having is the flashing orange light when it pulses it also pulses the device manager screen have you ever tried to click on an item that keeps pulsing to the top of the screen and by the time you line up the cursor the screen pulses again.

Well after a last ditch effort last night, I used bits and peices of information offered up by the apple geeks I started by disabling usb ports until I found a port that queried me why I was disabling the usb 2 port as the ?? device?? attached would not work as well( but It still did not acknowledge that the device was actually there) so I left it disabled took a gamble and restarted my pc still with the device attached after pc booted, I enabled usb port and restarted pc again with ipod still attached surprise surprise their it was...it continued to update and hasn't missed a beat. moral of the story don't download new updater it truly ***** it took 2 months to fix

Well had the same problem and after a month of brainstorming and reading all the threads managed to peice together a answer to my problem. I basically turned off every usb port off and by accident found the answer to my problem, my pc stated that the massive device attached to one of the usb ports would not work if i disabled it, before this it did not even acknowledge that the device even exisited (by the way my pc uses windows xp).
So i continued to play the trick my computer game...i left the ipod attached and all the usb ports disabled except the suspect port restarted the computer and forced my pc to acknowledge the ipod was attached and guess what it worked!!!! it's been two months and I havnt had a problem since. All my problems happened when i downloaded the new updater off the apple site. KEEP AWAY FROM THEIR NEW UPDATER AND JUST USE THE ONE ON YOUR DISK THAT CAME WITH THE IPOD MAKE SURE YOU DELETE/REMOVE/TERMINATE ALL LINKS FILES FROM THIS BLOODY UPDATER BECAUSE ITS NO BLOODY GOOD i know the apple braintrust is also scanning the threads and i wish they would paste a warning on their bloody site.

Sorry for the rant, good luck

I get exactly the same symptoms, but only started happening yesterday after more than a year of use. I have had to restore the factory settings once before, but now I can't as the latest version of the Updater tells me that 'The attached iPod model is not supported by this application'

I don't want to pay almost half the cost of the iPod for a support contract, did you (or anyone on this forum) ever find a fix ?
