Safari Keychain Password

I've been trying to find an answer to this very problem, so far without any luck.

Maybe if several of us look, we can find out!! -Oly

Hi , Welcome to the New Apple Discussions,

Key chain access is in Utilites ,click on your screen so finder is up on the task /toolbar go to Go>click > Utiliris> double click your KeyChain Access.

You will need the authorization password,it should be same as what you use to administer the computer to un lock.
note that there is help for Keychain whilst on KeyChain last on toolbar> Help

I'll try your suggestions.

One of the biggest problems, though, is that although the password SHOULD be the same as my admin password, and the dialog when re-setting the admin password SAID it would be the same - it is not! I have tried every permutation of any password I may have used in the past, with no success.

Sort of a "catch 22" !

Brian and Oly, this might help: (It worked for me.)

Open Keychain app. (Utilities folder).
At the bottom left, under the sidebar, click on 'Show Keychains'.
The top of the sidebar slides down to reveal keychains - click on 'System'.
You'll see in the main large window to the right the keychain you need to delete (AirPort in my case - yours?).
Delete it from the Edit menu (or the delete key on your keyboard). It'll be recreated next time you are asked for a password, but won't keep pestering you after that (if all goes well!).
Go to the bottom left of the window and click on Hide Keychains.

Nothing to lose - give it a shot?

Eme & Rod fryer - Thanks so much for trying to help. Stiil have the problem.

Rod - your idea seemed good: I was able to delete the Keychain "Login", which is what Safari keeps asking for. I got into my Yahoo OK without the "Safari wants you to use Keychain "Login" window & I was thrilled!

Then by way of experiment, I tried eBay - and there it was again!

Presumably if I could find the password for this "Login" Keychain, I guess it would be fine, but although it specifically states Your password is always the same as your login password..." But it's NO password I can imagine: it always comes back invalid.

I used the Tiger disk to re-set my password, and the same password as "System Administrator 'Root'" password - but still that "Login" password is a mystery!

Anyone have any ideas??

Wow. Oly, this is persistent isn't it?

Are you considering the 10.4.4 update? It might have an effect.

Or even the 10.4.4 Combo update. Sometimes people have said that a Combo update seems to 'clean out' any persistent quirks that have crept into the system.

Safari itself is updated in this latest OS update.

sorry this is still causing you grief

Perhaps you should post all the things you have done
to resolve this keychain problem, keychainaccess plist trashing,
running permission repair with DU,etc.

Rod Fryers suggestion to update is good, ought to be
at the latest build.
Resolving the issue first, would be priority for me.

2nd option for safari keychain autofill:

( Deleting a keychain

If your keychain has become inaccessible for some reason (for example, if you've forgotten the password), you can delete it and manually create a new keychain.

When you delete the keychain, you have two options:

▪ Delete References removes the keychain from the keychain list but does not remove the keychain file from your disk. If you remember your password later, you can recover the items stored in the keychain by choosing File > Add Keychain and opening this file.
➔ ▪ Delete References & Files removes the keychain from the keychain
list and removes the file from your disk. You might choose this if the
file is corrupted or damaged in some way and you don't want to recover it

1) Open Keychain Access, located in Applications/Utilities.
2) Click Show Keychains if the keychain drawer is closed, then select the keychain you want to delete.
3) Choose File > Delete "keychain" (the command will show the name of the selected keychain).
4) Click Delete References or Delete References & Files. )

Also what happens if you Un-check "Autofill items in Safari preferences?
i have it off on both 10.3.9 & Tiger 10.4.4 on power book.

I used to have this problem as well. I was able to eliminate the problem by:

Quitting out of Safari

then go to:

/Users/YourHome/Library/Keychain

and delete the file: login.keychain

Log out, then Log in, and Open Safari.

If the machine asks you if you want to reset the keychain to Defaults, say yes, and then (when asked) enter your personal password and click OK.
