whenever I try to play a cd or open a sound file in itunes the sound is all scratchy and has a lot of errors (jumps, clicks, sounds slow and messed up.) However, when I play the same cd/sound files in win media player they sound fine. Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it?
(I'm not very good on the technical side of things so any help would be much appreciated.)
thanks.
I'm having the same problem......only when I play a CD, its fine when I've imported the song in to iTunes or iPod, I have also noticed that when iTunes is running all my sound is messed up, sort of 'digitised' 'scratchy' it may be down to my sound card but I would rather try and sort it before I go and spend my hard earnt cash on a new sound card. I've even tried using the sound lead from cd drive to sound card still getting same problem - jumpy/scrached/poor quality
I was told to check my sound device in control panel. When I looked it had been changed by another program I had installed after itunes. When I changed it back to my original soundcard the sound returned to normal. It's worth checking what your system is using as a sound device. It should be your soundcard but some programs replace the soundcard with their own stuff. It just means when I want to use itunes I need to make sure I have the right setting. I think some software does conflict with itunes, but that's life.
I also have this problem, starting immediately after I installed the security patch MS just released early. All my other audio applications are working correctly.
...Windows 2000 Advanced Server v. 5 with all available updates applied
My solution:
(go straight to #6 if you don't want to read what was ruled out)
1. Under Control Panel--system--device manager, checked for changes or conflicts in hardware settings. None found.
2. Tried variations on loading and playing audio files to verify there were no problems aside from that in iTunes. None found.
3. Asked other users who had applied the same patch at the same time if they had any similar problems. None did, but all were using XP. Seems to be only on 2000 that this happened?
4. Under Control Panel--system--hardware wizard, ran the check for new hardware to force changes if necessary. None identified.
5. Under Control Panel--system--hardware wizard, forced reinstall of existing devices. No change.
6. Under Contol Panel--Sounds and Multimedia--Audio, changed noticed that the Preferred Device for audio playback and recording had been changed from the original correct setting. Changed both back, and iTunes then played correctly.
