Is the other person you are face timing on wifi. That is normally the message you get when the other person either does not have the FaceTime app launched on a mac or is not on wifi with an iOS device.
I am also having a similar problem. My wife has a Ipad 2 and I have a 4th generation itouch. We can Imessage each other. If I initiate a facetime it works with no problems. If she initiates a facetime, she gets a user not available but I will actually see it for a second or two and then it disappears and says that I missed the message. We are sitting next to each other on the same internet connection and also we use the same apple ID with our own email address'. Any suggestions?
ok basically I had the same problem and here are the answers.
# make sure u save the number under iPhone in contacts with country code and check the settings I'm 99% sure it would work for everyone
100% fail proof method
Add the persons aple Id in contacts and while calling the contact click on mail I'd and not the number
Hope that helps

OK, I had the same as everybody going from Ipod touch 4 gen and Iphone 4s. I had same apple id associated with each. I had one in each hand, and on my home wifi, so knew all was connected. I "thought" since I was syncing them together with my Win7 computer on itunes that I had to use the same apple id. Not so. You can set up a different ID for each device. That helps A LOT. But that being said, yes, as in previous replies, you need to ACTIVATE Facetime in settings for the first use. That is where you give it an email address, usually your apple ID address. With this set the same on my devices, I was able initiate facetime from the ipod to the iphone only by tapping the phone number listing in my ipod for my iphone. If I tried any email address (assigned to both the ipod and iphone) it failed with the "user not available" error. Yes, it does appear that the device is trying to call itself, I dont know for sure yet if it is because of the same email address, or the same apple id. I set up a new email address unique only to the ipod, and tried to facetime from the iphone to this new email address. No luck, not available. Only when I finally set up a new apple id on the ipod IN FACETIME SETTINGS was I able to properly call and answer either direction between the two. I do have a common apple id set up for icloud on the ipod (different than for facetime), so for now I am assuming that unless you are trying to facetime from email to iphone PHONE NUMBER or phone number to phone number, that you need to call to an apple face time ID. That separate facetime ID did the trick for me, but if you want to be able to have anybody facetime you on either device, It appears they my have to try one id (email address) and if they dont get you, they need to try a different one, depending on which device you are carrying at the time. I guess it makes sense since you dont want facetime to ring on two different devices at the same time from a single caller. Looks like you might be able to do it though. (I will have to try that one !) Does anybody see any other way to sort out this facetime / ID / account thing?
I am sitting with both computers. I have a MacBook Pro and my mother has a MacBook. We are on the same wifi network yet I can call her but she can't call me because I am "not available."
When I call someone using FaceTime on my Mac Book Pro it connects and I can hear them but they cannot hear me. On my Ipod Touch 4g however myself and whoever I am using FaceTime it connects and we can hear each other fine.
I am trying to facetime from my mac in the USA to my stepson Iphone 4 in Portugal and I get the msg....
"Is not available for facetime".
What could be the problem????
Thank you...
I had the same issue. I have an iPhone, an iMac and an iPad. I could not initiate Facetime to the iPad using either the iPhone or the iMac. I went into my contacts on the iPhone and iMac and added my Apple email address in the iPad contact record. This email address must be the email address set up under Facetime settings on the device you are trying to call. So my iPad must have the same email address in Facetime settings as the contact record on the device I'm calling from. When initiating the Facetime call, I have to use the email address to make the call to the iPad and not the phone no. of the iPad. You must also use a different apple id on the device you're calling from and the device you're calling to or you're essentially calling yourself which doesn't work.
When I call my iMac from the iPad, the iPhone and iMac both ring and I can answer the call on either device. This is because the iMac and iPhone both use the same apple email address and the iPad uses a different email address on the same Apple account.
If this sounds confusing I have one apple id with 2 email addresses (not aliases). The Apple id is Appleid@mac.com and the 2 associated email addresses are: Appleid@mac.com and Appleid@me.com
iPad = Appleid@mac.com
iPhone & iMac = Appleid@me.com and both these devices ring when I initiate Facetime to either one from the iPad but I can't call the iPhone from the iMac and vice versa because I'm calling myself.
Hope this helps someone.
i had the same problem.. the other guy could call me but i couldnt call him.. apparently i had his apple ID spelled wrong.. i had @hotmial instead of @hotmail.. when i fixed this facetime worked properly on mac iphone and ipad.. after the fix i also immediatly saw the facetime logo beside his email which wasnt there first.. so if you dont see that in the first place.. then you know that user is unavailable for facetime.. so check spelling mistakes people!! one single letter could make the difference..
hope this helps someone.. đ
Devices:
Me= iPhone 4 ver. 5.1
Wife= iPad ver. 5.1 WiFi only
Issue:
My wife could Facetime me at my .mac email adress and I would recieve the call. When I tried to call her at her new .me account it said she is not available. (I had added her new .me email in my existing contacts on my iPhone, which also included her already existing phone number)
Solution:
I created a new contact for her with just her .me email and it works perfectly now! I am guessing that adding it to the already existing contact with her phone number in the same contact did not allow a connection thinking it needs to go through a cellular network without actually doing so. Just a guess though. Hope this helps!
I had the same problem. However, if helps if you have the other person's email address. Why? How? Well, the best thing to do is get the email address that the person used to sign into their apple product (or signed into facetime: settings-->facetime). Once you have stored that apple email address into your facetime contacts (and you are also signed into your apple ID), then click on the contact. Then click on the specific email address. It should work IF BOTH PARTIES ARE USING THIER EMAIL ADDRSSES USED TO SIGN INTO APPLE. I don't know about the clicking the number. I am going to college and decided to set it up on my mother's IPad and call mine (with the number), but it did not work. It only worked using the email addresses.
Hope this helps đ
The trick for me was to turn FaceTime off and on again immedietly. Then I disconnected from wifi and then reconnected again. After that I tried calling someone on facetime and it didn't work. Then I tried calling them again and it has worked ever since. :)
Have you made sure that your email address is linked to your Apple ID, as well as the person you are calling, and they are both verified?
I have a 4s and my wife has a 4. I could facetime her but not from her to me. I noticed on her phone under the facetime settings she had my number in there with a check by it. I unchecked it and now we can facetime each other bi-directionally. It was as if her phone was trying to call me from my number to my number and made it busy.
