Is the other person you are face timing on wifi. That is normally the message you get when the other person either does not have the FaceTime app launched on a mac or is not on wifi with an iOS device.
Same problem... well kind of. I am living in Brazil and have been using facetime flawlessly iphone 4 to iphone 4 to communicate with family and friends back in the states. Then one day I try to facetime my father and gives me the message I have come to hate... Not available. So I tray my mother also Iphone 4... same thing. SO I logically assume they are not in wifi. Try again later when I know they are home still get the message. They try to call me, no success, apparently I am not available either... ummmm ok? So I open facetime on my mac and call my iphone 4. It works. I go Iphone 4 to my mac and it works. Next day my friend calls me from the states facetime mac to iphone 4 it works and I call him iphone 4 to mac and it works. Great! troubleshooting accomplished. I check the forums and find the little facetime reset trick. I have my father reset on his iphone 4 and I do the same. So again iphone 4 to iphone 4 No luck. So I have him call my mac facetime from his phone and it rings on my end! However, when I answer it only gets as far as the "connecting" phase and eventually times out. We give up and video chat on skype for while so I know the Wifi was fine. Afterwards I tried calling from my mac to my iphone 4 again... times out while connecting. Then I try calling iphone 4 to my mac and it doesn't event ring. I was running IOS 4.3.4 during all these issues. Not sure what my father is running. So I update to IOS 4.3.5 (just a security update as far as I know) and reboot my computer as well as my iphone. My Mac to My iPhone 4 works and vise versa. Try FaceTime to my father again iPhone 4 to iPhone 4… not available. What the F-bomb!
To sum up
Facetime seems to work for iphone 4 to mac but I can't get it working again for iphone 4 to iphone 4. I worked in the past but for no apparent reason stopped working.
Have tried the setting-->Phone-->facetime on off switch trick for both phones with no luck.
Have tried updating IOS software.
I didn't do a restore because that didn't seem to work for anyone else.
If anyone has any other suggestions I'm open to try them.
Until then I will wait for IOS 5 with my fingers crossed.

trying to connect to ipad. says not avilable. no support from apple. what to do. facetime fail?
The other person also must be on wifi and FACETIME must be activated in the settings menu.....
Try facetiming each other side-by-side .....
if it is still not working, visit the apple store.... =)
I was having the same issues, when I realized I didn't have a +1 at the beginning of the number - for the country code.... I'm outside the US, so my phone is setup a bit different regarding the international stuff, but it may have to do with the format of your phone numbers, international setting, etc.
All US numbers should begin with +1, but like I said, if you setup your phone for us, maybe this isn't needed, but maybe in facetime, it is?
Had the same issue as everyone. MacBook would not be available when called from the iphone via the email address.
Tried all the tricks, and nothing worked.
Had MacBook call the iphone but user had to sign in with Apple ID and password first.
Once that was done, I was able to use Facetime from my phone to the Mac book
My issue is ipad2 to ipad2. I can call my niece but every time she tries to call me, even if I am in FaceTime waiting for her call, if will show up as unavailable on her end without any ringing. Yet I can FaceTime her back with no problems. Have checked settings as noted above and it all seems fine. What are we doing wrong?
I too have problems using FaceTime from my iPhone4 to an iPod Touch 4th Gen. Wifi is on for both devices as is FaceTime for both. Is there anyone who has a solution? ANYTHING would help! 😀
Same problem here. I can call iphone 4s from Macbook pro but can not call MCP from iphone with out getting "Face Time Failed" or "_____ is not available at this time". WIFI is connected on both ends. Spent 4 hours on phone with Apple IT yesterday trying to figure it out. 1st with iphone IT . . . restored phone 3 times still no go. They sent me to MCP IT and they had me clean my mac, reboot and start in a new test window all of wich was unsucessfull. 4 hours to get no where. If someone has the answer let me know.
Update: I changed my apple ID email address on my MAC (made my wifes email address the Apple ID account)and now the 2 can communicate with each other. I guess they did not want to communicate with each other because they (my iphone and my MAC) had the same Apple ID email listed. The rep at Apple never told me that. I was wondering if they wouldn't recognize each other due to both having the same Apple ID email listed. I think when I tried to connect my phone to the MAC it thought it was calling itself (despite the fact that when I would call my phone from the computer I was calling a numerical phone number and when calling my MAC from the iphone I was dialing into and email address). Works great now. I hope this helps someone.
I met the same problem with you,Scott greenberg.
Can you solve it? Pls suggest me … plss
Just a follow up to my issue... since I have updated to IOS 5 the issue has disapeared.
I've had the same problem after my wife bought an iPhone 4S. She could Facetime time me via the mobile numbers, but I could not call her. The solution was to turn off Facetime on her iPhone and then back on. This prompted her to reenter her AppleID password, which we did and Facetime from my iPhone to her's via mobile numbers now works.
I think the problem was caused because after purchasing her iPhone we plugged it in to the MAC and restored from a previous backup of her iPhone 3S. My assumption is that her AppleID password was stored on the backup, but not accepted correctly when put back on to another handset. Also, until we did the Facetime off/on process she did not have a phone number stored in Settings -> Phone and we could not add one. Powering off/on the iPhone did not work before the Facetime off/on.
I have the same problem with my ipod. I cant call a iphone4 but I can receive a calls. And yes it is using wifi. How do you think i should fix this?
I am having a similar problem. My son's iPad will facetime anyone, but cannot facetime with my nephew's iPod. They are both on wifi, and both of their devices work with everyone but each other.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
I was having this problem with ipod to iphone and the solution was the country code. I had to add +44 even though we are in the same country!
