Suggestions for Updates to Apple Communities.

This will be a work-in-progress that I'll update as needed.

1. Bring back the "previous" & "next" navigation buttons at the top and bottom of the THREADS.

2. Bring back the link to questions we've posted. It could go in the "Your Stuff" drop-down.

3. Bring back the poster's location under their alias. As an International board, it helps to know where the poster is located. An answer that works on a U.S. machine may not work on a German, or even, British machine.

4. Need "Preview" button in post composing window.

Active: iMac (G5, G4), PB G4, iPad, iPhone, iPod, MP2100 Retired: iMac G3, A2c, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Mac OS 10.4.11, Mac OS 9.2.2, iOS 4..1, Newton OS 2.1

So far I've tried to view ALL of this thread using Firefox 3.6.16, TenFourFox 4.0.1, Camino 2.0.7, Opera 10.63, and Safari 5.0.5 with the same lack of success in all of them. Thus, I'm not going to waste my time trying it in the other 4 browsers I have.

Personally, I won't use Firefox because:

• it doesn't support OS X services like the system-wide spellchecker

• There seems to be no way to get it to honor some Mac-standard text entry conventions (especially command + cursor keys to move to the beginning or end of a line, which instead moves between browser pages & has caused no end of cursing when that loses a reply-in-progress in the new ASC discussions!)

• It renders some pages oddly (including some of its own help pages that obscure text that won't fit in the space provided for them)

• Most of all, I have lingering concerns about the security of third party add-ons & plug-ins, & about the stability of the app when they are present.

But to each his or her own. What is a show stopper for me might be of no concern at all for you, or visa versa.

It does things Safari doesn't do, too...

Really? There are considerably more security and privacy tools for Firefox than for any other browser, and I run about 25 add-ons at any one time, but Firefox has never (never!) crashed on me.

one trick I disconvered today, is to hold down the command key when clicking on a link. This brings up the page in a tab. You have to clik on the new tab to see the page. I click on several links so that I have them lined up to be read.

Robert

Safari works this way, too. Command + click gets you a new tab (and I have my preferences set to go to that new tab automatically); Command + Option + click gets you the link in a new window.

While in a text box, I want it to accept Command + Right Arrow or Command + Left Arrow as go to end/beginning of line commands, not as page forward/back commands. I use the line commands a lot, especially in long ASC replies & as I'm sure you know, changing the page in ASC loses any reply text. Together with no way to access the OS X spell checker, this is a deal breaker for me.

If there were some way around those two shortcomings, I might consider using it.

I'm not convinced all those tools are themselves properly vetted for security vulnerabilities. It is an older reference but see for example this page. The open source project nature of the app, the module ownership model of Mozilla, the built-in warning to install add-ons only from trusted authors, etc. just don't inspire much confidence in me. The same is true for concerns about stability because of all the troubleshooting steps that include disabling add-ons, extensions, or plug-ins.

With so many possible items from so many different sources, it is impossible to vet everything.

Open source projects produce some great apps, but there is a definite 'use at your own risk' element to them.

I prefer the way Safari handles tabs and bookmarks. Those are the deciding factors for me.

Interesting! That is precisely why I don't use it! I like the way Firefox handles those....

Ahh, what would we do without choices 🙂

Firefox had an advantage when it gave you a reminder when closing a window that you had several tabs in that window, and "Are you sure?" But Safari gives you the option to get that warning now, too.

I like being able to Option - Click on a tab and have all the other tabs close. I like tabs always opening to the far right and find it confusing to have them opening the way Firefox does it (specifically in YouTube, where you're clicking on links within tabs, and a tab will open next to the tab from which you're clicking instead of to the far right).

For me, Safari's little bookmark icon in the Bookmarks Toolbar which opens bookmarks is so much easier to use than Firefox's method for opening all bookmarks, and editing bookmarks is lots easier, too. Just click to highlight, and change the name (or the URL).

I guess maybe it has quite a bit to do with how you get used to doing something. I have installed OmniWeb, Shiira, SeaMonkey, Flock, Opera, Chrome, Firefox, Camino, and Internet Explorer 5.2.3. (You may all now break out in guffaws about that last one; it's for old time's sake.) Safari is just it for me. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's the best I've found for the way I do things. Every time I hear about a new browser, though, I'm going to check it out to make sure I'm not missing out on something I like even better.

That is the only feature Safari has that I'd like in Firefox.... I tried Camino once and wasn't impressed (haven't tried Opera in years and have never heard of some of the others except IE which wouldn't be allowed in my house 😉 ) and seldom worry that I'm missing out on something (I most likely am and don't give a .....) - if it works, why fix (change) it..... Probably an age related thing. On second thought, probably not 😕

I'm trying to see if this posts correctly.

Edit. Nope it is still not working right: Even though I have my view set to Threaded, it displays all posts in flat view. Also, when I post the reply I'm taken back to page 3, 4, or 5 of this thread where I find the the "Next" link doesn't work.
