Suggestions for Updates to Apple Communities.

This will be a work-in-progress that I'll update as needed.

1. Bring back the "previous" & "next" navigation buttons at the top and bottom of the THREADS.

2. Bring back the link to questions we've posted. It could go in the "Your Stuff" drop-down.

3. Bring back the poster's location under their alias. As an International board, it helps to know where the poster is located. An answer that works on a U.S. machine may not work on a German, or even, British machine.

4. Need "Preview" button in post composing window.

Active: iMac (G5, G4), PB G4, iPad, iPhone, iPod, MP2100 Retired: iMac G3, A2c, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Mac OS 10.4.11, Mac OS 9.2.2, iOS 4..1, Newton OS 2.1

The new forum software makes getting to the system spell checker difficult. However, in TenFourFox & I assume firefox, inside a text input box, try:

  1. you get the system spell checker in HTML mode
  2. control left click get you a popup. Click on spell check near or at the bottom. This turns on system spell checking. control left click to see the list of corrections

Yes, you can get the spell checker by using HTML and toggle back and forth. But don't see any advantage in doing that, since you can just click directly on the spellchecker icon and accomplish the same thing. Besides, in HTML, all the regular editing features are absent.

Either method requires an extra step. In fact, the spell checker icon is fewer steps, since you don't lose the regular editor and have to toggle it back.

WZZZ, there are two different implementations of spell checkers in the forum software: one from jive & the other from Apple.

The request was for the built-in Mac OS X spell checker from Apple. Clicking on the abc check gets you the Jive spell checker. The Jive spell checker is slower & doesn't let you add your own words. The Jive spell checker is static. It does find new words you type. It finds only the words mis-spellec when you invoke it.

Apple, please provide an option to use the apple spell checker instead of the Jive. Please turn on the Apple spell checker as before.

We've been over this one before. The system one doesn't work natively in Firefox. Not sure which one is being used in HTML mode. Didn't know the one from the icon was Jive. I used to use the Firefox spell checker in the old forums. butt nelingur nd thuts wy i cen nelenger spill priprerly nliss i clik one thee jyve on. In addition, Jive has cost me a lot of brain cells and turned me into a complete idiot (from a partial idiot.)

This has been explained several times. There is no Apple (or Safari) spell checker for Apple to turn on, but if you are running OS X & using a browser that supports the OS X system-wide spell checker service (like Safari or Chrome) you can use that instead of the one provided by Jive. This is the same spell checker other apps like TextEdit or Mail.app use. Because it is system-wide, any words you add to it in one app will be added for all apps.

For apps that support it, the OS X spell checker options can be accessed through the Edit menu > Spelling & Grammar item:

User uploaded file

If (as shown for Safari) the "Check Spelling While Typing" menu item is checked, misspellings will be underlined in red as you type. To get the OS X contextual menu with spelling suggestions, dictionary access, & so on to pop up on a red underlined word, in an ASC reply box you must control click on it. (Right click won't work because Jive reserves that for its insert/alignment menu.)

If the Edit menu does not have the Spelling & Grammar items shown above, then the app probably does not use the OS X spell checker service at all, or supports it in some non-standard way. An example is the Firefox browser application. For these apps either use the Jive spell checker or whatever spell checking service the app or its add-ons supports.

From what I can tell, the Firefox option does not use the OS X spell check service. From Firefox help:

Check my spelling as I type: When this preference is enabled, Firefox will check your spelling and offer possible corrections as you type in web forms. Note that you may need to download a dictionary; to do so, press Ctrl and click on any text field, enable spellchecking if necessary, and then use the provided Languages menu to download a dictionary.

Anyway, I have the option enabled in FF 4.0.1, have not downloaded any dictionary, & FF doesn't think things like 'brxad' are misspellings when typed into an ASC reply window.

I know this has been discussed here before. But, it hasn't been fixed😉

TenFourFox is working a little different. I turned on global spell checking which gets the OS X spell checker. It works fine when in a Yahoo reply text box and worked fine in the previous of the forum software. The global setting is ignored in a Jive rely text box. You have to turn on the OS X spell checker each time by control left click then picking spell check. I conclude Jive is interfering with the global setting.

Interestingly, the Mac OS X spell checker works fine in the reason you are editing a post. The Jive software is doing something to deactivate the native software in the reply text box. Notice the so-so word ibvious. Notice how rccharles ibvious is underlline in red in the reason for the edit box.

My request is to have an option to turn off the Jive spell checking facility. Have the OS X spell checker be turned on. Use the right mouse click as the spell correction list invoker. I do not care if I have to configure this or it goes back to working as before.

I'm asking for the status quo here.

for what it is worth, I find the wysiwyg text box editing facility bug ridden.
