Is it safe to charge my 11" MacBook Air with my MacBook Pro charger?
Greetings. In an effort to declutter a desk, i would like to have only one charger, so, it is safe to use the charger for my wife's MacBook Pro on my MacBook Air?

Complete rubbish!
It can't make any difference using a higher capacity charger as long as the voltage is the same (which it is). The MacBook wil only draw the amount of current it needs regardless of the model of Apple charger.
It's simple Ohm's law, as any electrical engineer will confirm.
If your battery did indeed swell it wasn't a result of using a higher capacity charger.
I had the same experience as Gmuff. My MBA wouldn't power up one day after using it for 20 months and the service center reported that the Motherboard had died. My batter was fine btw. And the reason they cited was that I often used Pro charger on it. Btw, their output voltages ARE different. I had to pay for a new motherboard out of warranty and it wasn't pretty. You wont notice the difference in 2-3 months but in longer run, it is going to damage some part in there, so I not ensure that I never use Pro charger on MBA.
They even told me that some damage might have been caused to other parts...possibly the flash disk as well due to overheating. So, I keep backing up my data now.
Don't risk it, it's not worth the convenience of using the same charger and having less clutter 🙂
nistha, you should sue your service center, because if this is what they said, it is complete rubbish and they should be liable for making a false statement.
There should be enough qualified electronics experts out there to back up your case.
And just to reiterate there is no difference in the output VOLTAGE (not amperage where there is a difference between models) of any of the Apple Magsafe chargers (45W, 60W or 85W).
I am assuming all these folk who insist there is a difference have measured the voltage at the logic board using a certified tester by Fluke, Rohde & Schwarz etc., and are using a genuine Apple charger, no I think not.
Thanks AbsoluteComputers...I am really baffled then. I will talk to them and see what do they have to say. And it also scares me that motherboard should have failed without any proper reason then because then what reliability is left.
nistha, just point the service cente to this statement from Apple, where they say "Power adapters for Intel-based Apple notebooks are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple notebook, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue"

Hopefully this finally puts and end to the ill informed arguments from all the alleged 'experts' out there.
