Safari address bar keeps going missing

Most days when I launch Safari there is no address bar there. I can get it from the menus or by hitting Cmd+L. If I click on a link in a page it goes again. The only way to keep it is to open another tab from a shortcut (I have a few in the dock) when the address bar is visible. From then on (during that session) the address bar will stay. If I open a new tab the address bar is there, but if I open a new window it is not. When I turn the machine off and come back to it the next day we start all over again. Just some of the time when I start in the morning the address bar is there. More often than not it isn't (must depend on the direction of the wind or something). This has been going on for ages now. Nobody seems to have any ideas. It would be great to find a solution.

Have you tried Safari in a new or test account? If not I'd start there.

System preferences, System, Accounts click the + create a new account.

Arc Angel & kspear81,

Two finger click is a great idea. But no dice. Nothing happens.

As an earlier person said, "I have tried everything in this post (except plist- because I don' know what that is) and nothing works". My problem is I cannot get the customize 'tool bar' to even show up. If I could get it to show up, I am sure I could click and drag the URL box in there. Plus other items that are missing.

Command L just gives me the same problems as other items listed here. Cmd \ only brings up a bunch of pages I have visited recently.

Can anyone offer another suggestion?
