SSD Invalid node structure on MBP 4,1

Hi,

I have an early-2008 MacBook Pro 4,1; 17" 2.5GHz Core2Duo and I upgraded the hard drive to a Kingston SV100S2 128GB SSD drive.

It worked perfectly for the first 4 months after purchase but 3 weeks ago the problem started when I tried to start my MBP and the grey Apple logo appeared with a kind of progress bar underneath it and then it would just power off (SMC and PRAM reset didn't help). The disk utility showed an "invalid node structure" problem which it wasn't able to fix and later the disk would be unreadable. Since the first time, this has recurred about 6 times. Each time I had to format the drive, install Mac OS X 10.6.3 again from either original DVD or it's image on hard drive (which is much faster), and transfer files from a Time Machine backup.

The drive would subsequently fail again after a couple of days each time. I have discovered that Kingston has released and official URGENT firmware upgrade, which I have installed after the 3rd failure, but it apparently didn't help. Also disabling hibernation and sudden motion sensor had nothing to do with it. Last time it failed (today), I was installing some updates and it failed after I was restarting, but I don't think it has anything to do with it either.

I am taking the drive back next morning to the retailer, where I bought it cheaply as a business owner, and I will ask them for a replacement, however I am still not sure if it could be my mac causing this chaos with the drive or the SATA cable being faulty.

I would welcome and be thankful for any constructive thoughts. Right now I had to replace the drive with the original one and everything is literarily at least 5 times slower and takes as much longer time to load, what is really bothering me. Thanks again.

It looks like we do not have any conclusion on this topic, except the Kingston SV100 is more power sensitive than other SSD. I have 2 more questions :

1. Will the situation would be better if I change to other SSD? I have friends using Corsair and Intel on old MBP and I haven't heard such problem from them.

2. If I were to buy a new MBP, shall I reuse this Kingston SSD or should I opt for the stock SSD from Apple? Most of us are using old MBP and I'm not sure if the MBP itself has power management problem. Anyone here using a new ( less than 1 year old ) MBP and have this problem?

Thanks

cbong69,

I've read some other threads about users with Intel SSD's facing the same issue. Didn't find anyone with a Corsair, OWC or OCZ facing the same issue.

Maybe, the key is the power comsumption. The SSD should spend less power than the stock hdd.

If you can, go for the stock Apple SSD. At least you'll get support for it.

I'm going to insist a little further to make this Kingston SSD work on my Mac. Otherwise, I'll get an HP laptop and use it on Windows, Microsoft isn't restricting SSD vendors like Apple.

Just great. The secod replacement drive lasted from my last post on Dec 10 until Monday Feb 6 - less than 2 months. Missing thread record with invalid node structure, unable to mount/unmount and this time unable to format at all. I selected the zero out option which rewrote the entire drive before it attempted and failed to format so it removed the data before I returned it. I specifically asked for a similar replacement but definitely a different brand so within 2-3 weeks they should confirm that it's faulty just like the previous 2 were and give me something. Now I am back to the stock Hitachi again.

Hello

Same thing here, I have a Kingston SSD 256GB, I formated my macbook 10 times in 1 month...

now it is stable and what I did was installing was "Trim Enabler", I guess you should try it.

My toughts are that SSD have a deficient memory managment, and if you don't have a Apple aproved SSD, Trim is not enable, so you need to get a app to that for you, and for what I know is that "Trim" runs in the backround and handles file deletions for the SSD. Guess it tells the SSD what is deleted on the SSD so that it should not use that space of memory for anything else then write new stuff.

Im having the same problem.

2011 macbook pro 15'' and kingston v100 128gb drive. I have the latest firmware, OS, and trim enabler. I dont know what else is worth trying??????

Crashed once in the first 3 months but then was fine for 6 months but this month i've had to restore from time machine 6 times.

Think im just gonna upgrade my drive to a Corsair performance pro as i cant be dealing with this rubbish anymore, i hate turning on my laptop as i never know if its gonna get past the logo!!!

Didn't have a chance to try the 'trim enabler' as I've reverted back to stock HDD. So far so good for one week. And the stock HDD is much faster than before since I've formatted and reimport from backup. I'm going to stick to stock HDD until the new air/pro come out, and I'll definitely go for the SDD option from Apple.

Well i think it is definately a power issue when the macbook falls into sleep mode via timeout or closing the lid.

I've disabled sleep and installed insomniax so theres no way i can accidentally put the mbp into sleep.

I just have to remember to turn it off and not just shut the lid, but if this means i dont have to buy another ssd then im game.

5 days and its booted fine everyday, i'll report back in a month.

Add me to the list of SSD sufferers... I bought two Kingston SSDNow V100 64 GB disks in December 2011. Installed them in my two mac mini's along with Lion Server. Now the mini that I normally power down has succumbed to the fate you all have described.

The amazing thing is that, after nearly two years since Marek opened this thread, this issue does not seem to have sorted itself out.

I'm thinking to try a Verbatim-branded SSD and test my luck.

A few other observations / thoughts:

On both my mini's, I have enabled FireVault encryption of the SSD's.

By booting using Lion's Command-R recovery option and then entering the Disk Utility and unlocking the SSD's CoreStorage-encrypted volume, attempts to use Disk Utility to repair the volume yield an error (diskXX is not a CoreStorage volume). Interestingly, I found that I could actually browse the "damaged" volume using the Disk Utility's Burn functionality. That opens a file browser dialog that allows me to enter into the disk.

By booting using Lion's Command-S single-user-mode option, I found that /sbin/fsck -fy ends with errors:

  • Invalid Volume header @0: incorrect block type
  • Invalid Volume header @62844726784: invalid field value
  • diskXX is not a CoreStorage volume

Nevertheless, I was able to mount the volume in single-user mode and browse the filesystem.

Hi, i used to have the same problem with my kingston v100 128gb on a macbook pro 13 2011. in the first 6 months it worked well, but then i had the problem of invalid node structure, i tried all the suggestions from this thread and others more without success. after formating my sdd 7 or 8 times, i sent it back to the retailer, and they gave my money back.

the issues with kingston SSD's is definetly the power consumption of them that OSX can't handle very well.

i've another kingston v100 on my windows 7 desktop working for 8 months and i haven't had any problem with it.

i bought a corsair force 3 180gb. i'm having no problems for 2 months now.

regards from portugal.
