I have asked this before under the previous Support system and was told that it was not possible. These accounts were lifetime things. Maybe this will change with the new format? I'd like to change mine, too.

You'll have to use another email address and register again to create a new username I'm afraid.

This is impossible at the moment, sorry

Thanks everyone.  Too bad, didn't realize when I was signing in the first time that this was a permenant display name, will just have to stop using my apple account then I guess.

    much appreciated!

In other posts employees of Apple told others that once these new communities rolled out this would be fixed and Admins would be able to do it. Did this change?

Let's hope so. I followed a link on Google, was in a hurry, clicked through without looking to hard, and now I've got this meaningless username attached to a business account I happened to be using in another tab elsewhere in the Apple-verse. Turned off everything I can notification-wise, turned on everything I can privacy-wise, as I can't find anyway to delete the thing. If someone actually wants to use the business account on these communities we're screwed. Who designs this stuff?

I'd like to register with a diff. user id for the forums too. But each time I log in I have to use my apple id; and then I'm back where I started. Do you mean you have to create a new apple account? That's different. What are the implications of that? (Except for using up the number of accounts you can create with Apple per machine/year)?

You can have more than one Apple ID, you just need to use a different email address to register and create it. It doesn't hurt, for example, to have one ID which is for iTunes and has your credit card details to purchase in the iTunes or App stores and another you just use for posting in Forums ...

I have the same issue John.

I believe there is a limit to the number of apple ids you can have; and each id has to be associated with a valid email, so unless you have several email accounts, or are willing to set up another email account, this solution is a pis aller, though it does work. Too bad Apple Discussions won't let you just change your user id. at will. Anyway, thanks for the tips.

I'd also like to do this if possible - any suggestions?

Just create a new Apple ID. You will need a different email address to associate with it, but you can use a free Googlemail, Yahoo Mail or HotMail affress.
