I have asked this before under the previous Support system and was told that it was not possible. These accounts were lifetime things. Maybe this will change with the new format? I'd like to change mine, too.

This is broken.

There should be a facility within the Apple ID site to either decouple an apple ID from an alias, or to change it.

I've just gone through the process because Apple didn't like my original alias, so now consequently my "real" apple ID is blocked from Support but is used for everything else.

So what happens now if I need to register a warranty support claim online for a product that is linked to my "real" apple ID?

Two other points of contention:

1. Why don't they do basic parsing on the aliases you create, and if something is going to be flagged and rejected later on, just advise so upfront at creation time, instead of saying "Name OK". There's obviously some form of automated process looking for names / words etc so just extend it and save us all a bunch of hassle.

2. I would be greatly enamoured if they chose to use the same level of effort in actually responding to issues raised and fixing them, that they do on these things.

I too want to change my username as it's possibly a privacy concern. If people see our full names on the support forums and can ID what hardware we are using, it wouldn't be that hard to figure out where we live (using the white pages) and rob us our prized hardware.

I'd like to see this fixed, even if it's a one-time-only kind of thing.

Apple has more money than the US Government. They should be able to devote a small portion of their welth to address this issue. I find this unacceptable that my real name has been chosen for me, to be displayed with any post I make, regardless of what level of poster I am.

Sorry, I am not trying to be offensive, just concerned about my identity. I shouldn't have to create multiple Apple IDs floating around each with their own password to remember. I should just be able to change the display name that I have had since 2005 and call it a day.

All- Before Steve Jobs Left and those that tried found the support people would make the change. However after several months of using my I.d. Petesweaty throughout ALL my apple services- I made a huge error in hitting the associate with email on the new "express help" area. Its description eludes that my User ID will be attached to my email and using an id is much easier to remember.(it even says this) I agree to that and hit the button. This effectively reverted me back to my email as ID and complety erased my User name as ID. There is no person at Apple willing to take the 30 seconds to do what a support service team under steve jobs did for me. All my computers, iPhone, Ipods, And OS versions (needed to run cause Lion blows using old software) All must be reset if I want to purchase from iTunes or Post. I Basically feel my identity has been stripped from me and I get ****** off each time I have enter a user ID or make a purchase. My original ID name always appears as a reminder of the Terrible customer support and stubborness to retrieve my ID back. I no longer champion Apple to my friends and associates. It has become too much a frustration dealing with Apple issues. All my new equipment does not work as depicted and no assistance can be found. Truly I believe Steve saw this coming and Bailed. I've never experienced such issues as a life time user (since apple II). Apple has jumped the shark. The whole "contain everyone into a cloud" is the worst idea. You only have to lose a document once to realize the faults of trying to maintain MY data with some unknown, unreachable source who could care less or can only apologize.
