Yes, you can use http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583>Target Disk Mode

The flashing folder means that the computer can't find a drive to start up from. Your hard drive may be dead, as well as your optical drive. If you want to keep the iMac, I suggest you take it in to a tech and have both drives replaced, or you can do it yourself it you are technically inclined.

I brought my computer to work to target mode it with another iMac, but one with 2.16 GHz intel core 2 duo specs. So I used it as the target mode computer with the boot disc in it's drive. It appeared to read the install disc on the other iMac after start up, but wouldn't go any further than selecting the install disc, when the circle with the line through it shows up. The install disc was for 10.3.6. Could that be the problem? It's the only install disc I have, so I assumed it was the right one.

OK, so assuming it's not too full and it has a FireWire connection, with Disk Utility, resize the primary partition by about 700MB, create a second Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition and use the Restore tab to essential copy the 10.3.6 CD-ROM onto that partition. You can then boot the iMac G5 from this partition and reinstall the system so it can boot again. If the contents of the hard drive are not of value, go right to the restore part.

Argh! I just tried powering the "problem iMac" up once more and I'm not even getting it to power on. Must be the power supply? Also swapped out the plug from the other iMac with no effect.

You know you've been very generous with your time and help, but I'm afraid it may be time to introduce this machine to the Mac shop, or just sell it for parts. Thanks again.

After 5 years, the usual Apple Store won't service it because Apple stopped supplying replacement parts. On the bright side, Apple should be introducing new iMacs in a couple of weeks. If there is useful documents on the hard drive in the iMac G5, then it's possible to pull the drive and hook it up externally to a new iMac via a USB adapter.

I see you're in Brooklyn. Bring it in to Tekserve, 23 Street between 6&7, Manahattan.

But the last time I was there, it was something like $150 for a diagnosis, which could be applied to the cost.

If I put in 11215, my Brooklyn zip years ago, I get lets of hits. The only one I know personally is Tekserve.

May not be worth it.

If it's the drive, it's not at all a difficult DIY. A piece of cake really. You need a 3.5" SATA 1 or 2 (not a 3) drive. Look for one at newegg.com. They aren't expensive.

This is for the 17." There is a guide for the 20" on the same site. If your model is the iSight, it can be done, but it's considerably more difficult.
