iPhone 4: Text Tone, Lock Sounds Stop Working

For the last month, my iPhone 4 (iOS 4.3.2) just stops playing the Text Tone when I receive a text message and the lock screen Sounds also stop working. Pretty much the only tone that is working correctly consistently is the ringtone for incoming voice calls.

When I go to Settings- Sounds- Ringtone - and choose the various options I get the sample sounds to choose the appropriate ringtone

When I go to Settings - Sounds - Text Tone - and try to sample the tones the phone simply vibrates. I cannot hear the tones at all

I have Settings - Sounds - Silent - Vibrate = ON

Sounds - Ringer and Alerts - Vibrate = OFF

Changing them around makes no difference at all.

When I reboot the phone, sometimes the text tone will work for a minute until the phone goes to sleep. Then the sounds stop again.

I have lock sounds turned on as well. Usually works for the first unlock, but if I unlock after a period of inactivity the sound goes away.

I've updated the OS, I've restored the phone. Nothing is working.

I would try to reset all settings for starters, goto Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. This does not delete anything, just resets all the system settings to default. See how that works for ya.

I seen your question because I had the same problem, someone on the thread mentioned the button on the side of the phone.. if orange is showing, your phone is in silent mode (in case you didn't see their reply)

To everyone else having this problem.... before going and doing 100 resets... check the switch/button on the side of the phone and make sure there is no orange showing.

I have an iPhone 4.

I was in the middle of playing a game when all sounds just stopped. No text sounds, NO sound from iTunes, nada. I checked my bluetooth, the mute button, reset the settings, restored the phone NOTHING..

The answer to my problem was posted by skrzpuuu

I'm going cut and paste what they said. It worked. I have NO idea why the phone just started acting so weird!!
I know that Apple announced the new iPhone 5 today, but I need my phone to work until the new one comes out. I plan to buy the new one....

from skrzpuuu

"Things were really strange. Iphone wasnt givin sound while unlocking/getting message after a long period beeing locked but second later when getting locked sound worked so it seemed like it needs to realize that should be giving a sound.

Was looking around the phone in many different options and finally found.

im not using english language in phone so I'll try to explain somehow how to do it.

definetly settings;d -> general ->go right to the bottom till you see the option to RESET settings, IGNORE that and enter the thing above that (WHERE YOU CHOOSE VOICE OVER/ZOOM and other things.)

Than you have the AssistiveTouch and right below you need to choose how you want the phone to tell you someone is calling. I chose SPEAKER and all is well since then."

I went to this setting, and I chose SPEAKER and the sound reappeared for all things that need sound, games, the phone itself, so try this

Problem and symtoms: Problem with no sound appeared on my 4S after using earphones. Clicks and keyboard sounds gone, etc as described above. Double checked mute slider was in proper position (no orange). Adjusting volume with buttons indicated 'headphones' still plugged in, but they were not. Sounds did however work normally with headphones actually plugged in, so not a software issue.

Solution: Very gently inserted a wooden toothpick into earphone port. Pushed gently with slight pressure. Sounds and speakers back to normal - "headphones" indicator is gone with volume adjustments. All normal. Thanks everyone.

I has the same problem. All of a sudden. The sound for texts and locking didn't work. If I tried adjusting with the two volume buttons on the left side, there were no volume bars at all. When I played a video, there was no volume bar.

Here's how I fixed it:

I took a q-tip and pulled off the bulk of the cotton swab so that the tip could fit into the headphone jack. I inserted it all the way and twisted it. I did this one more time with the other end of the q-tip.

Now it works!!! :)

My problem: Lock sounds and text/email alerts weren't working BUT the ringtones and alarm tones did work, strangely enough.

My solution: a simple reboot.

I understand how the earphone jack can get clogged up so the phone thinks it has earphones plugged into it and that a tootpick can remedy this but how on earth does a reboot solve the issue whereby some sounds worked while others didn't?
