This TRACKING thing: can't you just power off the phone?

So this Tracking issue that's been in the news:

can't you just switch off the phone and power it down, when you know you'll be at some place you don't want anybody to know you are? Surely we can all turn the phone off for an hour or two while we go someplace quiet where we don't want to be found? Like in the old days when we didn't have such devices? Obviously you don't want to just turn it off as you walk into the very building you're visiting, but do it a couple of miles down the road?

Please let me know if that is the case. We can just power it off, right?

By what mechanism is the consolidated.db transmitted back to Apple? I have read all the reports, including both the O'Reilly research report and the one published last year that went into more detail. None of them suggest that the data is transmitted anywhere. The O'Reilly report is specific that the security risk, such as it is, is that consolidated.db is on your desktop in clear unless you have encrypted your backups.

Why not get rid of your stupid answers? Nobody benefits from stupid nonsense answers like that. I probably wont get another iPhone now. The iPhone is great, its an amazing device, just too bad it is controlled by Apple. So I guess I should have to go buy a new unsubsidized phone because Apple decided to track everywhere I go. Yeah that is how a reasonable person thinks... Or how about people express their displeasure to make Apple respond and change their ways? Wouldnt that be much more beneficial to the entire user base? If you want a phone that logs everywhere you go, that has a constant internet connection that someone could hack into rather easily good for you, but most people dont! Did you ever think for a second why you are one of the few that doesnt care about this?

Look, you are completely wrong! It has nothing to do with photos, there are tons of entries in that file on my phone and I have used my camera maybe five times. It has nothing to do with taking photos...

The problem is not only that Apple collects this, it is that the data is there at all. Your phone is like a computer that is constantly connected to the internet with no virus protection. This data is on your iPhone, every iPhone, and people with much worse intentions than apple could get access to it.

No, they don't.

No matter how many times you wrongly believe that this data is collected, it is not.

If it was they would be much smarter using the GPS rather then cell site triangulation.

There is a disclaimer that they "can" collect GPS information, and you can opt out of using GPS.

Your phone is like a computer that is constantly connected to the internet with no virus protection.

No, mine does have protection. I only use appstore apps, and they are regulated.

So far there is no iPhone virus, and no way for my iphone to get one.

This data is on your iPhone, every iPhone, and people with much worse intentions than apple could get access to it.

Yes the data is there, but no one can access it.

I am more worried about them getting a hold of all my contacts, email access, and passwords.

Knowing that I go to work and home, and to different cafes is easy to guess if you take a look at my contacts!

The data is hidden in the phone, and if you encrypt your backup then no-one else can get it.

Look I agree we should be upset that this database is growing and not cleared.

People are asking for Apple to fix this problem; and they should.

But it's not a big security issue for those who have secure computers and phones.

Panicing and making irrational decisions about a small issue is not worth it.

So I guess I should have to go buy a new unsubsidized phone because Apple decided to track everywhere I go. Yeah that is how a reasonable person thinks...

No a reasonable person looks at the risk, and sees if it is really bad.

This isn't for me, but if it is so big for you then you should temporarily rent a phone and keep your iphone off till this is resolved. If your safety is hinged on others knowing your whereabouts then having a cell phone is a bad idea.

Or how about people express their displeasure to make Apple respond and change their ways?

This is a USER forum so complaining here is as good as yelling out your front door.

If you want a phone that logs everywhere you go, that has a constant internet connection that someone could hack into rather easily good for you,

No, that's why I don't have a google phone! 😁

Jokes aside, if you don't want phone internet, turn it off in the menu.

iPhones are not easy to hack.

Yeah, it does appear to log cell towers you connect to; let's hope they fix it.

Only one part of your statement is about the iphone, the rest is ignorant scaremongering.

Did you ever think for a second why you are one of the few that doesnt care about this?

Yeah I did, then I looked on some forums and saw more people that are not to fussed, and a very small amount who are making wrong assumptions and blowing it out of proportion, and then a few who thinks it's not big and are trying to help the panic-ers settle down.

So far the only real issue is that there is a database that has logged the cellsites my phone has connected to over the last year.

This is stored on my iphone in a place that is hard to get to, and no one has shown that you can "hack" it out of an iphone wither wirelessly or if you hold someone else's phone.

It is stored on my computer, but in an encrypted back up (which you can choose to do but many haven't bothered to do); which no one has shown to be able to "hack".

The file has been shown that it is NOT sent out to anyone. No one has been able to show it is sent out, and experts have stated that it does not ever get sent out.

So what is the panic about?

Yeah it needs to be fixed, but we don't need a press release right now that says they will fix it.
