This TRACKING thing: can't you just power off the phone?

So this Tracking issue that's been in the news:

can't you just switch off the phone and power it down, when you know you'll be at some place you don't want anybody to know you are? Surely we can all turn the phone off for an hour or two while we go someplace quiet where we don't want to be found? Like in the old days when we didn't have such devices? Obviously you don't want to just turn it off as you walk into the very building you're visiting, but do it a couple of miles down the road?

Please let me know if that is the case. We can just power it off, right?

Yes. Or put it into Airplane mode.

Simply said: Don't not save any type of confidential data on your phone as long as it's not inside an App that encrypts its data properly. Examples for such Apps would be Lockbox or 1password.

On other mobile OS's you can install encrypted file systems but Apples security concept is that they don't give users or the apps any type of control about the system, thus you don't have this option on the iOs platform.

Matthew Morgans suggestion likely will be enough for if not so confidential data but keep in mind that all the current JB implementations work by exploiting the iOs boot loader - which means code can be run on your phone before the operating system loads - long before you have to enter the password. This takes some effort so it's likely only done if people actually expect to find something of value on your phone.

By the way, Apple finally answered on the original issue: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2384372,00.asp

I'm not too worried.

A hacker would be dead from boredom if they say what was on my iPhone.
