Import titles to iTunes - Slow

Thanks Fred - how do I do that without losing all of my library and play lists ?

I've got the file but am at a bit of a loss how to do it.

I'm also rather worried about my (substantial) library - I don't want to damage it

If I rolled back in Time Machine, can you tell me when10.2.2 was released so that I get the date right

Here's a surprise ...

I've just enables Genius on my 447.5Gb library.

It took an eternity to work through, but now the import facility is working properly.

New tracks fly in again.

Go figure !

Genius update halved the problem. iTunes 10.2.2 still pauses for all database update tasks. Even rating a song takes over 1min. Adding files up to 5mins.

But it's manually selcting and playing songs that is the killer. A 1min to 2min delay before a song starts....

iTunes can no longer be used to play music!!!!!

and since I run an Aiport Express, and 2 Apple TV's as Airport speakers......

importing slow for me as well. how do I downgrade? I get the message: "iTunes can't be installed on this disk. A newer version of iTunes is already installed." I assume I have to delete the app in the application folder and edit the preferences files to say 10.2.1 instead of 10.2.2. Is there anything else I need to do?

Just check you haven't got a corrupted file in your library.

Use activity monitor to inspect the iTunes process.

The Open files tab will let you know what is happening.

If iTunes hangs on a particular file, then that file may havebeen corrupted.

Just delete it (manually) from the media store and you may recover the situation.

It has worked for me in the past

All you've got to do is delete the previous version of itunes fom Applications.

either remove from /Applications/ folder or use terminal like I did:

sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/

then reinstall the 10.2.1 version. Everything worked fine for me, no need to edit any .plist files.

I have this problem now. iTunes is unusable in this state as anything I add to the database causes it to freeze, making me force quit.

+1 here. Initial install of new itunes 10.2.2 did not seem to cause problem, but it started happening later. Disabled home sharing, still no love. Strange. I will try the 'genius' fix.

unfortunately this problem still exists in 10.3.1

I've installed 10.3.1 on top of the library that has had genius fully updated on.

Apple is getting close windows problems.. It's not anymore what it was !! !!!! 😠

Not to pile on, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one with the horribly slow import problems. It's too bad this thread ended with no real resolution -- was there one on some other thread I've missed?

It's not just a problem on the Mac version -- I have it on a Windows 7 install as well.

It doesn't seem to be a pure code problem. I have two notebooks with the same 10.4.0.80 release. One imports normally (still not blazing, but reasonable). The other is horribly slow (about 5 minutes per typical album). There must be some condition that kicks it into the slow import state. I've tried the home sharing and Genius suggestions, but the one is still slow.

Unfortunately, the slow one is the new notebook that I just went through the hassle of making my primary sync computer for my iPhone (BTW, it is just stupid how hard it is to change the primary sync computer for an iPhone -- really guys). I've got 13,400+ songs across 1280+ albums. At 5 minutes per album, it seems like it will take 4 and a half days to finish importing them all. Ugh!

I don't know whether Apple really doesn't care and doesn't want to invest in iTunes, or what, but it would be nice to take some of that huge hoard of cash they have and invest in some serious QA and expert multi-threaded developers to fix this thing once and for all. It's just plain stupid that importing takes so long, and even stupider yet that it locks up iTunes and makes the UI completely unusable while it's off doing whatever it's doing.

the fix for me was suggested in many threads: uncheck "keep iTunes media folder organized" - then recheck it. It will take some time to run through your library (I have 27,801 songs)

When it finishes you'll be set.
