Is it possible to save a copy of the voice messages from my iPhone 4 to iTunes?

Actually, what's happening seems odd. First, the voice messages from iPhone 4s which had (presumably) been backed up to iCloud didn't restore to iPhone 6s when restoring. Second, when I sync the 6s with iTunes ("voice memos" is checked), the sync goes but the voice memos aren't on the 6s. Would they be somewhere else? Third, the voice messages on old phone which had (presumably) been backed up to iCloud didn't restore to 6s. Is there a way to get those voice messages off the 4s and transferred to 6s? I so appreciate anyone's help, and am sorry I'm not more tech savvy.

A voice message is one thing, a voice memo is another. They are two different things. A voice memo is created by the voice memo app on the iPhone, and can be synced to iTunes. A voice message, the way I interpret it, is a voicemail, and those cannot be saved to anything other than your iPhone. They actually reside on your cellular carrier's server.

If you are talking about something else, please explain further.

I'm actually talking about both.

I have several "voice memos" saved in my iTunes from iPhone 4s. Those have not synced into 6s, even though have that box checked when I sync.

I also have several voice mails that are saved on the 4s. Those did not come over when I restored the 6s from the 4s cloud backup. It's my understanding, from researching it, that the only voice mails still on the carrier (in this case AT&T) server are from the past few days. Those are on my 6s, but no older ones (still saved on 4s) were restored to 6s.

I'm trying to figure out a) how to sync those "voice memos" in iTunes to my 6s, and b) how to retrieve saved voice mails from 4s.

Thanks-

Voice memos should sync with iTunes, if you have them set to sync in iTunes. When you look in Music in iTunes, your voice memos can sometimes be found under Artists, with the name of your phone as the artist.

Voicemail should have come over with the restore of the backup of the phone if they were on the phone to start with. If they didn't, there really isn't much you can do except to try to make a backup of the old device again and restore the backup. However, that removes everything on the phone that is currently there. The only other way to archive those voicemail messages is to get a 3rd party software to do it. That will allow you to archive the voicemail to the computer, but you cannot put them back onto the new phone that way. TouchCopy is one that works for the Mac OS and Windows platforms. There is another one for the Mac, I believe the name is PhoneView. Depending on how much content you want to handle, they have a free trial, or there is a cost involved.

I have indeed set voice memos to sync in iTunes. On my list, the entry is under "playlists," and is listed alphabetically. I've synced iTunes and the 6s several times, but those memos aren't carrying over. I wonder if they're somewhere else on my 6s, and somehow I'm not seeing them in the "Utilities" file under "Voice Memos." The next time I plug the 6s into my computer, I'll look to see if the voice memos are listed under "Artists."

As for the voicemail, only 2 or 3 three (most recent) ones transferred in after the restore. (And I had backed my 4s up to the cloud just seconds before restoring the 6s from the cloud.) At this point the 6s hasn't backed up to the cloud (I've prevented it), so that same backup is still the most recent one in the cloud. (Unfortunately the 6s has backed up to iTunes, so any old voice mails have now been replaced, I assume.) Do you think the voice mails might restore into the 6s if I try restoring again from that same iCloud backup? I've also found a program called iExplore which an article says can help me to remove those voice mails from the 4s and at least put them into a file on my computer. Any thoughts about that?

Thank you-

The program suggestions that I provided you are loaded onto the computer and the phone is plugged in. From there, the software is opened and will allow you to copy the data to the computer. The decision on what program you use is yours, or you can use the one that you found yourself. It is up to you. I do not have experience with iExplore, but I'm very familiar with TouchCopy, as I have used it myself. It does more than just voicemail.

If you backed up the 4s and the voicemail did not transfer, then I wouldn't think it would do it if you tried to backup the 4s again and restore. However there is no harm in your trying, since you can make a backup of the 6 prior to your test and restore to it if you want.

ChrisJ-

I found the voice memos listed in itunes under Artists. I checked them (there are two entries), and they have been synced to my 6s. Unfortuantely, they're in the music playlists/artists instead of in the voice memos app. Any idea how to get them to the voice memos app where they belong?

I'm exploring the options for retrieving voice mails from 4s.

If I wanted to back up the 6s before restoring the new phone from previous 4s backup, how would I do that? The 6s and 4s are currently named the same thing, so the backups replace each other, if that makes sense.

Thank you much!

The shouldn't replace each other, but you can change the name of the 4s if you like, and create a backup of it, or change the name of the 6s and back it up. Either way works for right now, as you can change the name of the devices whenever you like.

As far as the voice memos, I'm not sure how they work after you sync them to the computer. I've deleted mine, but take a look here and see what it has to say. http://help.apple.com/iphone/9/#/iph3d6dc359 This is from the iPhone online User Guide.

I have this question too, with the exception that the voice mail from my phone, wireless stores them on my providers server. I can log in and listen to the message. One day I opened iTunes and a page popped up with phone number and name, much like a caller id. It had downloaded all my voice mail to iTunes. Since that day I have never been able to repeat the process. Any ideas? I would be very appreciated if someone could share any help to recreate.

Thank you,

Marcella

Problem solved. Thank you for reading this. My voicemails are saved on my providers phone service. If I log in and release the files to me after my code is answered it lets me see my emails. The login code was the culprit. After I entered it, I opened iTunes. Tada all my phone messages were downloaded by iTunes. The place to look is in your Library in iTunes.

Sincerely

Marcella
