Well that is an ALL OR NOTHING solution. What if you want only a certain many contacts to delete?
Download the app Contacts Duster - Smart Duplicates it really works, and it's free! You can delete as much contacts as you need to.
To delete contacts from iPhone permanently, you need to use a professional iPhone data eraser application. To save your time to look for a suitable tool by trial and error, you can read this use guide about how to delete contacts on iPhone permanently, and try my recommendation a iPhone data eraser tool, which is a quicker and easier contact erasing process on all iPhone models at once.
The easiest and safest way to ensure that all your data is deleted is to use a third-party tool such as iOS Data Eraser, especially for an iOS device like iPhone or iPad. It is perhaps the best iPhone and iPad eraser, which can help you erase contacts on iPhone permanently, that will get your devices all cleaned up like new before you want to resell it, donate it, trade it, or even send it off to repair. Download the program and follow these steps carefully to permanently delete your data from iPhone or iPad.
The easiest method is to use iCloud and delete all the existing contacts in there. After that, sync your iPhone with iCloud, the all you contacts should disappear on your iPhone. However, all contacts will be gone for all devices with the same apple ID, this could be dangerous. For contact deletion only, i'd recommend to use third-party app to delete iphone contacts instead which can delete specific items individually without any effect to other iDevice.
upgraded my 4 to a 5s & want to give the 4 to family member & need to erase contacts in the 4. Some of the comments at the app store re Spring Cleaning make me concerned that if i download it on the 4 it seems that it may erase my contacts on my 5s. turn off cloud sync & be fine? other suggestions? thanks

Download an app called SafeEraser from AppStore.....

2 then choose the contact source which you want.....
3 then select which contacts you want to delete....

Very Helpful ... my done thnx
You have gotten many ideas already.
I have yesterday used this free app on iOS 8.4 for deleting all contacts from an iPad that was not syncing to iCloud:
ContactsXL Classic
https://itunes.apple.com/no/app/contactsxl-classic/id364481787?mt=8
Great, easy solution!
;best way is to create passcode and enable to delete after 10 attempts to get in.
I found a simple way of clearing all contacts without downloading any apps.
1) Connect to iTunes
2) go to "Info" for the phone
3) Click the Sync Contacts box and choose a contacts account that is empty. I selected "Windows Contacts" since I don't use that system. You may need to create an empty contact group and use that.
4) Scroll to the bottom of the page
5) Under Advanced::Replace information on this iPhone, select the "Contacts" box
7) Click Apply
This will erase all your contacts and replace them with nothing.
Worked for me on an iPhone 4, I hope it works for you.
