Delete duplicate photos from iPhoto
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)
I've just downloaded "Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro" and I've deleted 1000+ already!!
You CAN drag the whole library into it, and auto mark the lot and delete - but I'm more cautious and dragged folder by folder into it, auto mark, then you can see them, and delete then.
Bit by bit I'll get the lot done...:)

HI,
I just saw this as I was noticing that I constantly end up with multiple thumbnails of a photo- even if I've literally imported them one time somehow I still have duplicate thumbnails. will Duplicate Annihilator work for that or are there some cases where you actually are supposed to have multiple thumbnails? I know that sounds like a dumb question but literally- yesterday, I imported a few new photos and when I went back in to my Images library, many of the photos already had duplicates! Is that normal?
Thanks.
Where are you seeing the duiplicate thumbnails? In the iPhoto window or via the Finder somehow?

HI,
I ams seeing the duplicates in the FInder- sometimes more than 1 duplicate (even if I always select NOT to import duplicates). I just want to make sure that the Duplicate Annihilator program would be safe to use in that it would only delete the unneeded duplicates and if for some reason, the program needs some thumbnail duplicates for any reason, that they would be fine?
Thanks!
you should not be using the finder to go into the iPhoto library - there is no reason to and it is dangerous
Duplicate annihilator is safe and will remove duplicates - but you will still have two or three versions of each photo in your library

Thank you- I don't use Finder to go into iPhoto- I have used it to backup my photos (dragging from the All Images in Finder to my EHD) b/c when I have tried to backup, my Iphoto library in Finder is empty. It's only within All Images that I can find the Iphoto Images that I have. It's been like that ever since I switched to this laptop from my old Mac- is that a sign I screwed up something long ago?
All Images is the finder going into the iPhoto library - you should stay away form it
the only way to backup the iPhoto library is to treat it as a single entity (which it is) and copy it to a different drive
What you have been doing backs up your photos but not your library - you want to backup your library

You've been so helpful- I felt I was doing something wrong. couple of questions to help me try to start from scratc since my Iphoto is also corrupt and now completely empty and I want to try to rebuild:
- When I download from my Canon cameras, the images automatically go into a Canon Imagebrowser program but they never show up in Iphoto. Should I NOT be doing this?
- The only photos that ever seem to download into Iphoto directly are from my Iphone but even though I could see those in the Iphoto program when I open it, there exists no actual Iphoto Library folder in my Finder. Should I manually create an Iphoto Library or how can I ensure that an Iphoto Library is actually being built in Finder vs just having the photos show up in the program itself?
- When you say that going forward I should backup my entire library- I assume you mean drag my Iphoto Library in Finder (once I build one) to the EHD? Or drag the Iphoto icon to the EHD?
Sorry- I'm not very good at this stuff as you can see.

What happens when you launch iPhoto?
as top using iPhoto - it is a database and only knows about photos imported into it
Most people use it exclusively - in the iPhoto preferences you set iPhoto as the program to be used when a camera is connected and things are automatic then
It is best not to allow iPhoto to delete the photos after importing but to later after being sure everything is OK (and for me after at least one backup cycle) to use the camera format command to reformat the memory card and erase photos
have you watched the iPhoto videos? - iPhoto help menu ==> iPhoto help and watch videos
backing the iPhoto library involves copying it intact to a different drive - dragging is the best - you do nothing with the iPhoto icon or the application - just the library
Based on your response to the first question someone can help you get restarted - just not srure wher eyou are at this time

Well, when I launch the Iphoto icon, I can see photos that I have imported into it (mainly from my Iphone, and then some historical photos from my old laptop).
But if I go into my laptop HD and search, I find no folder named Iphoto Library. I realized this a few months ago and panicked that my Iphone photos were lost but then realized they were in the All Images file. I'm not sure how I screwed up.
I have tried to recreate an Iphoto Library but when I try to open 'package contents', there is nothing in there for me to recreate. Can I actually create a new Iphoto Library (using Command + OPtion and choose Create a new Iphoto library) and then actually manually drag photos from my external hard drive back into this Iphoto folder? Would that work? (Is there an specific way I should drag from EHD to my new folder, if I do try this?)
Thanks!
In the Finder use the Go ➙ Go to Folder menu option. Enter the following: /volumes
If you find a library there drag it to the Desktop and then into your Picture folder.
How do I move some big movie files out of my hard disk iPhoto and put them into another EHD and delete from my HD? Then, I need them removed from my memory card because they keep re-importing, and I'm scared to erase the card as it is the only way to get the photos on all my computers because syncing is out of the question; it is too likely to delete photos trying to synch multiple machines.
Do you have iPhoto on all your computers with libraries you want to have all the same? If that's what you want then have a look at SyncPhotos.
Here's how it works:
1 - it compares the databases and/or album.xml files of Libraries A and B.
2 - the files in A that are not in B are imported into B by copying the original files from A into B's Import folder.
3 - it then does the same for B.
4 - metadata is not copied.
It can be used to just copy from A to B and not sync both ways if desired. It will work with 2 libraries that are different versions, i.e. between an iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09 library.

D Annihilator isn't that good either. It leaves about 50% dupes. Not sure where there is a really good one.
